His eyes finally left mine and returned to the police chief.

“It was a joke, Ayres,” Garrett said.

For a tense moment, I thought that Daniel was going to tell him to get the fuck out, but the tension in the air vanished abruptly.

“I know,” Daniel answered.

He and Garrett held gazes for a long moment, fraught with unspoken words. Then, they broke eye contact and Garrett helped himself to more bacon.

“Breakfast was delicious, Cari,” Daniel said as he returned to his chair and picked up his fork.

“Thanks,” I murmured, wondering what in the hell I missed between the two of them.

I was no expert in men and even less of an expert in supernatural men, so I felt completely clueless and in over my head.

Who was I kidding? I was in over my head before I factored my attraction to Daniel into the equation.

I had to figure this out and fast.

To my shock, Daniel disappeared to take a shower right after Garrett left. And he didn’t seek me out after that.

At first, I was irritated. How in the hell could he just walk away from me as though that insanely hot make out session in his home gym hadn’t happened?

Then, reality set in and I remembered the epiphany I had at breakfast. I had no idea what I was doing with Daniel. I wasn’t supposed to be here very long and he was going to wipe my memory of him as soon as Bernie lifted the spell around my mind.

Did I really want to have sex with someone I wouldn’t remember in the long run?

I mean, in theory, I wouldn’t mind forgetting a few of my less-than-stellar flings. Something told me that I wouldn’t want to forget the vampire that kidnapped me. Not for the rest of my life.

I realized that it was best that Daniel and I had been interrupted by the police chief that morning. It had saved me from making a huge mistake.

With the decision made, I spent the day wandering around Daniel’s house. Even though he hadn’t left, I didn’t see him again until around five-thirty that evening.

I’d resigned myself to scrounging for dinner by myself and had just opened the fridge when he walked through the kitchen doorway on silent feet.

I jumped in alarm at his abrupt appearance and clutched my chest.

“Jesus,” I gasped. “Give me a little warning before you just show up like that.”

His expression was distant, another indication that having sex with him that morning would have been a mistake, and said, “Sorry. I wanted to see if you wanted to go back to Sam and Remi’s for dinner.”

“Sure.” I closed the fridge. “Let me grab my shoes and purse.”

I ran upstairs and took a moment to run a brush through my hair and swipe a little lip gloss on my lips.

I met my gaze in the mirror. “I made the right decision. No sleeping with the hot vampire.”

Then, I grabbed my purse and ran down the back stairs to the garage. Sure enough, Daniel was already in the car with the garage door up.

He was making it clear that this wasn’t a date. Good.

Excellent.

I didn’t need him to treat me like a date. It might make me doubt myself.

Which I didn’t need to do.
