Stupid superhuman vampire strength.

“What the hell do you think you’re doing?” he shouted into my face. “You could have tripped over one of tree roots and broken your idiot neck!”

Considering I wouldn’t even be out here if it wasn’t for his ass, he could not blame me for this.

“This is your fault, so who’s really the idiot?” I yelled back, lifting my head since it was the only part of my body I could move.

He reared back as though he was shocked I had the temerity to scream at him.

I was suddenly extremely aware of the hard heat of his thighs against mine where he straddled me. And the insanely delicious smell of expensive cologne.

Oh, no. No, no, no. I wasn’t doing this. I wasn’t all that great at picking men, but no way in hell was I going to find my kidnapper attractive. That was the line I couldn’t cross.

I tried to wriggle free again, but he leaned forward, holding me down with laughable ease.

“Just…stop,” he commanded. “You’re going to hurt yourself.”

“Considering you’re the one holding me down, don’t you mean you’re going to hurt me?” I shot back.

Suddenly, I wasn’t just angry or scared. I was fucking pissed as hell.

Fuck this kidnapping. And fuck him.

“You…you…asshole!” I shouted.

Then, I did something I shouldn’t have. Something I never would have done if I’d understood what it meant to a vampire or shifter or any other supernatural creature in this godforsaken town.

I lifted my head and bit him on the neck. Hard.

His body went rigid against mine and he shifted his grip so that he held both my wrists in one hand. His other hand came to my jaw and pressed against the side of the bone, right in front of my ear.

I cried out at the sharp pain that shot through my face and released my grip on his skin. My head fell back with a thud, and I stared up at him.

“You shouldn’t have done that.”

I snarled at him, a sound akin to a growl coming from my throat. “Why? Because you’ll bite me back?”

His hand moved from my jaw to the nape of my neck, fisting in my hair. “You already think I’m an asshole, so I guess this won’t make a difference.”

His eyes flared, glowing with a light from within. The brilliant green intensifying until his gaze burned like a flame.

A chill erupted over my skin. Oh, shit. This was bad. I didn’t know a damn thing about vampires, but even I knew this was really, really bad.

“Wha-“

Before I could finish the word on the tip of my tongue, his lips slammed down on mine.

It wasn’t a kiss. Not really.

More like a punishment.

Something sharp scraped my lip and I tasted the coppery tang of blood.

Before I could bite him again, on his face this time, a gruff voice came from above us.

“Is this the problem you were talking about, or have I interrupted something?”

Daniel straightened, turning toward the shadow that hulked above us. His grip on my wrists loosened, whether from surprise or relief I wasn’t sure, but I wasn’t going to let the opportunity pass.
