I scowled at him. "It's not mothering, it's safety. I need to know if you're still in place or if we need to come rescue your ass."
"Ha! I've never needed rescuing."
"Should I list all the times I've had to save your ass?"
Callum went to the bed and shouldered the bag. "Go ahead and write it down. I'll read it and point out all the mistakes when I get back."
There was his usual sarcasm.
"I'll call you tomorrow," he said. Then, he was gone.
Unsettled, I went back into Merry's room, dropped my pants on the floor, and crawled in next to her. Still asleep, she turned toward me and threw her leg over my hip as she nuzzled her nose into my chest.
I held her close and tried not to worry about Callum.
A shadow loomed in the future, but I had no idea when it would swallow us.
