"Too many questions."
"Like they won't have questions when they wake up in the warehouse with two chairs and chains lying on the floor in front of them."
"Did you shut off the cameras and erase the video memory?"
"Yes, Father." His answer was dry. "I am serious, though. You should have let me kill him. This is going to come back and bite us on the ass."
"If it does, we'll deal with it, but we can't go around killing humans without drawing attention to ourselves. Especially humans who've managed to find us once before."
Callum made a face but stopped arguing, which meant he was either done talking or he was planning to circle back around and kill Channing anyway. Either way, it was out of my hands.
We entered the building and walked down the hallway. It looked like any other generic office building, even though it was fairly small.
We turned the corner and saw the guard standing at the end of the hall in front of the door. I'd been checking my bond with Merry periodically and she was still out, which worried me. She should have been conscious by now.
Since Callum and I had both been in our underwear, we'd stripped two of the male guards in the warehouse. The suit I'd taken off Channing's bodyguard was a bit tight in the shoulders and thighs, but Callum was a little bigger than I was and had to take the fatigue pants and tee off the other guard. The shoes hadn't worked out so well though. We'd had to take combat boots from both the guards.
The human didn't say anything as we approached, but he did adjust his stance, straightening a little.
"We're here for the prisoner," Callum said.
The guard nodded, glanced at my shoes, and tensed.
Before he had a chance to do something stupid, I grasped his mind. "Sleep."
Unlike the others, he sat down immediately, leaning against the wall, and passed out.
Callum tried the door and the knob turned easily in his hand. "Dumbasses. Did they think that Merry would just stay in the room when she woke up?"
As soon as we saw her, he swore. "I guess they did."
They'd laid Merry on a metal twin bed but secured one of her wrists to the metal frame with a pair of handcuffs. The bed was screwed to the ground as the chairs had been. She could sit up but she couldn't go far.
I walked over and knelt beside the bed. "See if you can find the key to the cuffs in his pocket," I said to Callum.
He didn't argue for a change, just did as I said.
I leaned over Merry and stroked her hair. "Can you wake up for me, Merry?"
She remained so still.
"Merry, you have to wake up," I said, a little more forcefully. "I need to know you're okay."
"I'm fine," she slurred. "Jus' tired."
I bent closer until my nose was nearly against her skin and inhaled. Shit. They'd drugged her. That's why she was still out of it.
Callum dropped to the floor next to me and handed me the handcuff key.
"Is she okay?" he asked.
"They drugged her," I growled, unlocking the cuffs.
Her hand was so limp in mine.
"If you're not going to let me kill that Channing asshole, let's get the hell out of here," he said.
I stood and picked Merry up off the bed. Her body felt boneless and the urge to slaughter every human here gripped me. I reined in the impulse. She was more important than they were. We'd shut down the cameras, erased the video footage, and Callum had installed a virus on one of the computers, promising that it would destroy every computer in the network.
We'd also adjusted everyone's memories. They thought they'd discovered supernatural creatures but been proven wrong.
Even if they found a small piece of evidence to the contrary, they wouldn't believe it.
"Let's go," I said.
Magic swirled around us as we traced out of the building, back to our home.
