Immediately, Gabby got up and padded barefoot out the back door and across the porch that connected their duplex in the rear. Hesitantly, she tapped on her sister’s door.
“Fee?” she called softly.
Her sister opened the door quickly, her eyes red, and Gabby felt her own eyes fill with tears.
“I am so sorry, Fee,” she whispered. “I don’t know why I said that. I appreciate that you care so much about me. I’d be lost without your advice.”
Her older sister, ever the one to forgive, held out her arms, enfolding Gabby in a hug.
“I understand, Gabs. I was projecting my problems onto you. I just can’t stand the idea of you getting hurt the way I did.” She sighed. “Logan is a good guy. Even back in high school, he was a great friend. It’s just that I remember him having very itchy feet.”
Gabby giggled. “Itchy feet?”
“Always ready to move on to the next girl, the next challenge. He was always looking ahead, whether it came to dating, school, or career.”
“Ah. So you think he’ll be heading back to Dallas?” she asked, straightening from her hug with her sister.
A perplexed expression on her face, Phoebe answered, “I don’t know, Gabs. He seems more…settled now.”
“Well, I promise I’ll be careful.” Gabby reached up and wiped away a leftover tear from her sister’s cheek. “I’m really sorry, Phoebe. Please forgive me.”
Phoebe sniffed. “Already done. I know I sound like Donna Doom with all my dire warnings and worries about relationships. I’ll try to back off a little.”
“Ah, forget it. I was just being too sensitive because I knew you were right,” Gabby responded. “You can say anything to me, Fee. Anything. If you want to talk about Clint or anything else, I’m here.”
Phoebe smiled. “I know. I’m just trying not to think too much about it right now, you know? It still hurts.”
Gabby nodded. “I understand. I love you, sis.”
“Love you too, Gabs.”
After one last hug, Gabby went back to her own duplex, still feeling an ache in her chest over hurting her sister with her words. Unfortunately, the seeds of doubt had also been planted in her mind.
Maybe taking things slowly with Logan wasn’t a bad idea after all.
