HAYDEN
“How is he?”
* * *
“Son, have you eaten?”
* * *
“Declan,you need to get some rest.”
Declan?
What the fuck?
“I’m not leaving.”
* * *
“Have you called his dad?”
“No. They aren’t close. I won’t make that decision for him.”
* * *
“The medicine isn’t working.We need to take him to surgery.”
* * *
“Doctor, is this normal?”
“Yes. He sustained a serious head injury.”
“But you said the pressure was going down. That the surgery worked.”
“And it did.”
“Then why hasn’t he come around more?”
“We are keeping him under to give his brain time to heal.”
“Will he be okay?”
“Yes, sir. There will be some time away from his unit if…”
My eyes fluttered, and I moaned.
Fuck that shit. I need to get back to my guys.
Flashes of light burned the retina of one eye and then the other, and I flinched, trying to get away from the pain.
“Sergeant Marin? Can you hear me?”
A moan rumbled in my throat as I swam toward the voice from the dark abyss swirling around my feet.
The last thing I remembered was the air leaving my body just before the water swallowed me whole. Then everything went black.
