"They're going to kill me!" I choked out.
"Who?" He looked over my head, but no one was around. "Kinsley, what the hell are you talking about?"
Tears rolled down my cheeks, and I pressed my hands to my mouth. "Inside," I whispered.
He helped me into the house and sat me on the couch before getting me a cup of water. "What the fuck's going on?"
"I went to the Gallaghers' house." I accepted the water and drank a few sips, feeling slightly less terrified in the warmth of the familiar house.
Danny sat beside me. "I take it they weren't thrilled at your news?"
I shook my head. "Mrs. Gallagher was very polite at first, but Mr. Gallagher pulled her from the room and told her she can't let Burke know what I said because I'm lying. Then he said he'd call someone named Reaper to kill me."
"Those are the words he used?" Danny asked with a frown.
"To get rid of me and the bastard I’m carrying, is exactly what he said."
"Close enough," he murmured.
"I want to go with you to Bristol after all."
He gripped my icy hand in his, and it felt warm and reassuring. "Of course. Brenda wanted to know what you'd decided."
"I can't go home. I gave them my name. They'll look for me at Mom and Dad's."
He squeezed my trembling hand. "But all your things are there."
"I'll give you my key. You can go while they're at work." I heard the desperation in my voice, but thoughts of keeping my baby safe pushed through the fear.
"Okay, I can do that. You don't have a lot, do you?"
"No, just my clothes and books."
He nodded. "Brenda found a job, and I think we have an apartment nailed down. We're heading there this weekend to check it out."
"Can I stay here until then?" I pleaded.
"Of course. You don't even have to ask."
"I'm sorry I'm such a wreck."
"No, Kinsley." He sat beside me, and I rested my head on his shoulder. "You're scared, pregnant, and sad. None of those make you a wreck."
"Don't take this the wrong way, but I love you."
He chuckled. "As a brother to his sister, I love you, too."
"I hope Brenda's happy she got her way."
"She will be. She loves you too, even though you've known each other for a short time."
"But you're the glue."
"Who knew I'd end up being a responsible adult?"
I sighed. "Who knew I'd be an irresponsible adult?"
"This is just my opinion, but he should have brought up birth-control. He's been around the block a time or two."
