Indi shot her head up and looked at me. “Who the fuck is that?” she asked. I didn’t answer, knowing damn well who was at the fucking door. “Haze?”
I licked her again before reluctantly pulling away from her pussy. Indi sat up, covered in icing and batter. “It’s fucking, Aiden. He’s here to pick me up.” She blinked. “I was going to tell you, but things got a bit messy.”
Indi scoffed and jumped from the counter.
Fuck.
“Indi,” I groaned. “Please don’t be mad. I just have to take care of a few things.”
I shadowed her as she snatched the shirt and threw it over her naked body. “Mad? I’m not mad.” I made a face. “No, you know why? Because this is what you do, Haze. You show up, fuck me, then you leave.” She shook her head. “You always fucking leave!”
Aiden knocked at the door a second time. “I’m coming!” I returned my focus to Indi. “I’m not leaving, I’m just heading out to take care of a few things before I come back. And I am coming back, Indi.” I reached for her face, but she pulled away. It hurt to see her in such pain, knowing all she wanted was me. But I had to do this…I had to take care of things. For her.
Indi crossed her arms and fought back tears. “I just wish I didn’t have to share you.”
A sharp pain hit my chest. “You don’t have to share me, Indi. Fuck, what can I do to make up for this? Tell me.”
Her eyes raised to meet mine, burning green from how red they were. “Stay.”
“I can’t do that. Not now.”
She huffed. “You can’t do anything.” She wiped her eyes. “I just wish we could be as real as everyone else.” Her words made no sense. “Like—go out, be in public without judgement. Something…anything! I hate having to hide who we are. Yes, this apartment is beautiful, but it isn’t perfect. You may think it’s perfect because we can openly fuck, but what else? We can’t have anyone over, and we can’t leave. It’s an overpriced prison, Haze. And in the end, how is it any better than Mary-Jane’s?”
Her words hurt. “I thought you’d be happy here. But it seems no matter where we go, I always disappoint you.” I brushed past her and grabbed my bag and jacket. Indi silently watched me. “Maybe I shouldn’t come back.”
I walked towards the front door and froze, waiting for her to stop me. I wanted to drop everything and carry her back to bed and show her exactly how fucking much I wanted to be here withher. But it wasn’t my choice. My safety, the protection I extended to her, came with a price. It was out of my control. And the only reason I even fucking did any of this was for her. But if it tore us apart, then it wasn’t worth it. I’d choose her over my safety. But only if she wanted me.
Just tell me to stay, and I’ll stay. Fuck, Indi, tell me to stay!
She scoffed. “Fine. Don’t.”
My face burned with anger as my entire body bulged with pain. I looked back over my shoulder at her and spoke in a low voice. “Fine. If that’s what you want.” I swung the front door open.
Aiden nearly fell over from listening in. He jumped back and blushed. “Hey. Are you ready?” His eyes moved past me to Indi as his smile fell. I refused to answer as I walked past him. “Indi?” Aiden called from behind me.
“Keep him as long as you want!” She slammed the door shut and locked it.
I wanted to run back and break the door down, to hold her and tell her everything, but I couldn’t. She didn’t want me. Fuck, I should’ve known it was too good to be true. No, this can’t be the end. It can’t!
“Haze?” Aiden appeared at my side. “Is everything okay?”
I shook my head. “No. It’s all fucked.”
I looked back at the door, hearing Indi’s faint cries from the other side. And I knew what I needed to do. “Aiden, I need another favor from you. A big one.”
FIVE
INDI
“I should just throw allthis shit away!” I kicked a box of Haze’s things, pissed that I was back at Mary-Jane’s dealing with all of our boxes. Thanksgiving was only a few days away and I was running out of time, moving everything all by myself. It wouldn’t have been so miserable, had Haze not left. Or rather, had I not told him to leave.
“Fuck,” I groaned. “What is wrong with me?” I fell to the floor of my old room and cried. Haze did exactly as I asked and didn’t come back. I spent the whole night wandering our new apartment, unable to sleep. Eventually, I sent him a text, apologizing, but he never responded. I told him I was sorry and didn’t mean any of it, but no matter how many times I messaged him, he never replied.
Where are you, Haze?
I pulled the burner phone from my bag and opened it up to our texts. I had sent so many messages since last night, ranging from desperation to anger. Anything to get a response from him. He said nothing. “Uhh!” I threw the phone across the room.
“Wow.” I looked up to see Mary-Jane standing in my doorway. “I really thought you'd have your shit out by now.” Shemade a face. “Do you not have anyone who can help you move faster?”
