Spoilers? I would NEVER.

Where’d Zoe take you?

So far? Window displays at Saks, Macy’s, and Bergdorf Goodman, dim sum in Chinatown, and now skating at Rockefeller Center.

She’s off trying to figure out if she can rent rhinestone-bedazzled skates like she saw some teen girl wearing (even though we already rented our skates). Only reason I had a chance to text you.

Not that I couldn’t text you in front of her, but…

My chest feels unduly warm. I don’t know exactly what kind of friendship or connection or whatever this is going to be is blooming between me and Owen, but yeah. It feels private.

No, I know what you mean.

Good.

So, just to clarify, you did not despise my manuscript with every fiber of your being?

I’m shameless.

I could NEVER.

I’m full-on melting.

Good.

So, did Zoe tell you any more of her plans, or is this a true captive situation?

CHAPTER 37

OWEN

Owen

Are you kidding? Zoe? The itinerary is on a need-to-know basis and guess who she’s decided doesn’t need to know?

I lookup from where I’m hovering, at the side of the rink, just out of skate traffic. Zoe looks like she’s given up on the skate upgrade, but now she and the girl are posing for selfies together. I duck my head, hiding my grin. Leave it to Zoe to befriend a random teenager in the middle of the city.

I should leave George alone. I know he needs to work today, but I can’t help it.

Owen

I wouldn’t say CAPTIVE, but no, plans are above my clearance level.

Also, I get the feeling she’d go after me if I tried to escape… okay, maybe captive is right after all.

George

You want me to text her with some kind of distraction? Celebrity gossip, maybe? She’s a sucker for queer speculation or anything involving B-list stars reinventing themselves as pop singers or running for office. Doesn’t have to be true.

I snort out a laugh.

Don’t think we’re there yet, but I’ll keep it in mind.

What are friends for?

I know he’s joking, but I like the idea that George and I are friends.

“What areyousmiling at?” I look up to see Zoe skating my way, a big, inquisitive grin on her face.
