Not exactly a shock since hyenas almost never risk attacking as individuals. What was more surprising was that they seemed completely oblivious to the other shadows creeping up behind them. I didn’t bother counting, because, honestly, even a handful of my Boxenwolf brothers could decimate a hyena pack with little to no effort, using only the weapons they’d been born with and there was no chance that they were only traveling with those.
I crossed back to where Chuck and Jeremy were deep in conversation about the scheduling options for the internship program, carefully handing Bella to her Papa.
“Chuck?” I said, keeping my voice calm and even. “We have company.”
A military man himself, Chuck caught my meaning immediately and craned his neck to look out the window. Other than a slight widening of his eyes, he remained calm. Standing, he neatly scooped up the papers that they’d spread over the table and gestured for Jeremy to follow him. “Jeremy, let’s retire to my office. Kade has this under control.”
Jeremy opened his mouth to argue and I pressed a kiss to his lips. “Go, baby. I’ll be more distracted if I have to worry about you two, also. You’ll be safe with Chuck.”
Jeremy’s brow was furrowed with distress, but he nodded. “Yes, Alpha.”
When I heard the reinforced vault door of the saferoom thud closed, I shoved a chair against the only wall without a window and plopped down, facing the door with my back to the wall and waited.
It didn’t take long, maybe another forty-five seconds before the door flew open and a partially shifted hyena woman tumbled head over heels, leaving a streak of blood on the wooden floor when she slid to a stop at my feet.
“Felicia, right?” I greeted, baring my fangs in a smile. “What brings you here?”
“We know you have him!” the Alpha female hissed at me, her words twisted and garbled as she struggled to get her feet under her. “You can keep the whore, but that baby is ours!”
“Fraid not,” I disagreed with a smirk. “I know you were served with a copy of the marriage certificate that we filed with the Council, so you know I married your brother before he delivered.” I shrugged. “That means the babe is mine.”
Felicia snarled, saliva dripping from her fangs as she glared at me. “You can’t do that!”
“I can and I have,” I replied, wincing when a scream came from outside. The sounds of a bloodthirsty battle echoed through the small room. “You know, your soldiers are just going to die out there if you don’t call this off.”
“That’s not your business,” Felicia snapped.
“True,” I agreed with a yawn. “How’d you find us, anyway?”
Felicia gave a nasty laugh. “Please. That Omega has had a tracking chip implanted since he hit puberty.”
Well, that was an interesting twist. “Then why did you need to hire me to find him?”
Felica’s lip drew back in a grimace as she paced in front of me. “We thought it quit working. It would register for a day or two but then crap out before we got to him.”
Ah. That made sense. It was probably undetectable when he went underground into the root cellar.
“Where is he?” Felicia demanded.
I cocked my head. “You’re not getting your hands on them, so it doesn’t matter.”
The sound of a siren split the air and Felicia sprang at me, clawing blindly as she attacked. I knocked her away with a backhand swipe that sent her sprawling to the floor. She was still hunched over and glaring at me when a member of the COPSD burst in, weapons at the ready.
Chuck stalked out of the office, his face stormy. “Officer, please remove this person,” he spat the words in Felicia’s direction, “and her cronies. Omega Destiny International is absolutely pressing charges.”
“Of course,” the officer agreed quickly, cuffing Felicia and handing her over to another man who was lurking on the porch before turning back to face Chuck, holding out a piece of folded paper. “While we’re happy to have been here in your time of need, we’re actually here to serve a warrant. You are familiar with an Omega by the name of Jeremy Boutaine?”
Chuck ignored his question, accepting the paper and reading through it before handing it to me.
I scanned it quickly, my jaw dropping. “Are you fucking kidding me?”
Chuck shushed me. “Jeremy? Come out here, please? Bring Bella.”
Jeremy walked out, his face still pale and stopped in the doorway, his eyes wide as he stared at the man before him. “Clyde? What are you doing here?”
