“And the Omega?” the guard asked, shooting a pointed look at Jeremy, who was fast asleep, his head propped up against the passenger window.
“He’s with me,” I raised a brow and waited.
The guard frowned, but returned to the tidy brick shelter by the gate and picked up a black telephone handset. He spoke briefly and returned to my window. “Follow this road to the dormitories. The office is on the left. Mr. Keir is expecting you there.” He glanced down the road behind me. “He said you might have companions?”
I shook my head. “Not that will be joining us.” When I reached for my license, my shirt sleeve rode up. From the widening of his eyes, I knew the guard recognized my mark. “Anyone asking for either of us are not friendlies.”
“Understood.” The guard stood a little straighter. “You were never here.”
“I appreciate that.”
He turned back to the hut and the gate slid open. I followed the path through the carefully manicured tree line that wound around a few bends and over a hill, stopping in front of the small building that held the office and infirmary.
“Are we there?” Jeremy blinked his eyes open and stifled a yawn.
“We are,” I confirmed, killing the ignition and unbuckling my seatbelt. “Are you ready to go in?”
My Omega just shrugged and clicked the release on his seatbelt. “Do I have a choice?”
Well, that was a valid point.
“Assuming that we’re right about being followed, not really,” I admitted. “Other than we can stay out here for a few minutes before taking the plunge.”
“No point in that,” Jeremy sighed, reaching out so I could help him up. He winced when his weight shifted. “Oof! I have definitely been sitting for too long.”
“As soon as we’re settled, I’ll give you a good rub down,” I promised, helping him through the door and down the steps.
Jeremy surprised me with a wicked smile. “I’ve got something you can rub, Alpha.”
A muffled laugh behind us turned into a throat-clearing cough and I shook my head.
“Chuck! Good to see you!” I clasped my old friend’s outstretched hand and pulled him in for a hug.
“Kade. It’s been too long.” Chuck returned my hug with a bone-crushing squeeze and turned to the Omega standing beside me with a kind smile. “This must be the Omega that Colby called me about?”
“He is,” I agreed, pulling Jeremy forward. “My husband, Jeremy.”
“Husband?” Chuck’s brow shot up. “Is that recent?”
“It is,” I acknowledged. “Kind of a complicated story.”
“Well, then I imagine we’d best go in and sit down,” Chuck suggested, holding his hand out to Jeremy. “Regardless of the situation, Jeremy, it’s very nice to meet you.”
“Thanks,” Jeremy gave him a nervous smile. “I’m sorry for bringing my problems to you.”
Chuck laughed. “Dear boy, helping Omegas find solutions to their problems is literally why we exist!” He held the door open for the two of us to enter and then gestured down a short hallway. “The restroom is there,” he said with a wink. “In case you need the information.”
Jeremy threw him an appreciative smile and turned to the left. “I’ll be out in a minute.”
Motioning for me to sit on the leather sofa in the main room, Chuck walked over to the coffee pot and poured two cups, setting them both down on the table in front of me and then sinking into the chair across from me, his legs curled beneath him.
“So, anything new?”
I stared at him for a minute and then I laughed so hard that by the time Jeremy was back with us, there were tears running down my face.
