“I’d be honored to marry you, Alpha.”

Sonny cleared his throat. “You two make whatever preparations you need to, but we should get this show on the road. I have two witnesses outside, but, honestly, at least one is going to be too shit-faced for it to be legal pretty soon.”

“Of all of your siblings, Pete’s my favorite,” Kade said with a grin, snickering when Sony grimaced.

“Do you have many brothers and sisters?” I asked, honestly curious.

Sonny groaned. “I come from a good Catholic family of rabbit shifters, what do you think?”

“Oh.”

Kade laughed. “Did you want to change or anything?”

I shook my head. “I’m okay if you don’t mind me like this.”

The heat in his eyes as Kade looked me over assured me that he definitely didn’t mind. “I am more than good, baby.”

I felt my cheeks heat up as Sonny snickered. “Okay, then. Let’s get out of here.”

As promised, the bunny-man and Sonny’s Omega, Antoine, were waiting in the Sheriff’s truck when we climbed down the metal steps and walked out into the crisp morning air.

“Give me that,” Sonny hissed, snatching a flask from the long-eared shifter and shoving him none-too-gently toward me. “Go stand next to Jeremy.”

As soon as Pete stumbled to a stop next to me, Sonny cleared his throat. “Dearly beloved, we are gathered here today to celebrate true love…”

And that, my friends, is how I ended up getting married in an empty parking lot, next to a busy highway, standing next to a drunk Easter Bunny while a cranky wolf shifter alternately smiled at me and snarled at my husband-to-be.

You know, perfectly normal and very traditional. Pretty much par for my life.

Chapter Nineteen

Kade

Jeremy and I stood and waved as Sonny’s tail lights faded off in the distance. Then, I looked down into my husband’s face and couldn’t help but smile. Phony or not, it sure felt right. “You must be starving.”

Jeremy laughed. “You’re more obsessed with me eating than I am.”

I shrugged. “It’s my job to take care of you, isn’t it?”

Jeremy’s eyes glinted and I knew he was holding back tears. “You’re the best Alpha ever.”

I waved the compliment off. After all, between hormones and stress, I wasn’t entirely sure his declaration was unbiased. I wrapped my arm around his waist and led him back into our temporary home on wheels. “Why don’t you find a spot to stash the clothes and things that Sonny brought while I scrounge up some lunch?”

“Um, you know I can cook,” Jeremy said hesitantly. “I can fix lunch.”

I shrugged again. “I’ve got it for now,” I said. “You need more rest and you’re still regaining your strength.” When he opened his mouth to argue, I brushed our lips together. “Let me do it for now, Jem.”

Jeremy leaned his head against my chest and sighed. “Thank you.”

I patted him on the butt. “Get after those boxes, baby. I want to get on the road again as soon as we eat, okay?”

“Yes, Alpha,” Jeremy agreed with a cheeky smile that made me laugh. It was promising to see little bits of his fire re-emerging.

I threw together some turkey sandwiches and fruit slices which we ate at a picnic table in the abandoned rest stop before heading back down the road.

I drove through the daylight hours, partly to get as far from Jeremy’s family as possible and partly in the hopes that if Jeremy slept during the drive, we might get our out-of-whack internal clocks back on track because, frankly, being a nocturnal being on a diurnal schedule sucks.

“Do you want me to drive for a bit?” Jeremy’s sleepy voice came from the living area behind me where he’d agreed to lay down for a few hours.
