“The sheriff,” I said, not stopping to consider how that was going to sound. “And a doctor, so we need to get up.”

Jeremy jumped from the bed faster than I would have believed he could move in his condition, stumbling when his foot caught in the blanket. I gasped and grabbed for him, barely catching the back of his shirt to pull him back so he sat hard on the bed instead of falling to the floor.

“What the hell are you doing?” I snarled. “You’re going to get hurt!”

Jeremy turned on me, his eyes flashing. “So what? Is there some sort of clause that they won’t pay you if I’m hurt?”

Startled at his words, I loosened my grip on his shirt and he jerked it out of my fist.

“Don’t worry, I’m fine,” he spat the words at me and somehow managed to flounce angrily out the bedroom door, leaving me staring after him in shock as he yelled, “I’ll make sure you get your damn money!”

I scrambled after him, stopping to yank a pair of jeans from my bag and stepping into them as I ran down the hall. I nearly slid to a stop when I reached the living room and saw my Omega sitting awkwardly on the sofa, naked under a blanket with his hands cuffed behind him and his eyes still blazing.

“What the fuck, Sonny?”

ChapterEight

Jeremy

How the fuck could Kade have done me like that?

My stupid heart was screaming even as my brain tried to be the voice of reason. Ofcourse,Kade had screwed me over. I mean, he didn’t owe me anything. I knew that.

He’d just taken care of me and I’d completely surrendered to his kindness like the affection-starved idiot I was. I stripped off his shirt as I stalked through the lodge, throwing open the front door completely naked and turning my back to the three people on the porch, my wrists behind me.

“Sir?” The man in the green-trimmed sheriff’s uniform spoke, his voice soft but authoritative. “Are you the Omega that Kade told me about?”

“Yeah, that’s me,” I ground out, desperately trying to fight back the tears building in my eyes. “Can you just cuff me so we can get this over with?”

“Um..”

I wasn’t sure why he was hesitating. “God damn it, just fucking cuff me, would you? It’s cold out here.”

“Okay.” To my amazement, there seemed to almost be a note of humor in the cop’s voice, but I felt the movement of air behind me that said one of them had stepped up close. Gentle hands snapped the cold metal onto my wrists. “Are those too tight?”

I shook my head. “It’s fine. Can we go?”

“We’ll need to have a word with Kade, first,” the sheriff responded, gently prodding my shoulder. “Why don’t we go inside and get something to cover you?”

“Whatever.” I knew I was being disrespectful, but, honestly, I couldn’t find it in myself to care at that moment.

“Here, why don’t you sit down?” A softer set of hands touched me then, steering me carefully toward the sofa. Then the plush blanket I’d left on the chair earlier was fluffed and laid over me. “Do you want some water?”

Looking up, I saw the smaller man, an Omega in street clothes instead of a police uniform, watching me, his face etched with concern.

I shook my head. “No,” I said, trying to keep my voice calm. “I’d rather you just took me in and got it over with.”

“I think there’s a misunderstanding,” the sheriff said quietly. “Didn’t Kade tell you we were coming?”

I shook my head. “Not until you got here,” I mumbled. “I thought he was going to help me, but he called you instead.” I tried again to blink back the tears. “It’s okay. He’s just doing his job.”

The Sheriff and Omega exchanged a look, but before either of them could speak, Kade came rushing into the room, still pulling his jeans up over his butt.

“What the fuck, Sonny?”

The sheriff just shrugged, tossing something at Kade, who caught it in one hand without ever taking his angry gaze off the new arrival.

“Don’t look at me,” he said, shrugging his shoulders. “He opened the door upset and demanding to be handcuffed. I tried to tell him I thought there was a misunderstanding, but he was insistent.” The sheriff waited while Kade stormed over to kneel beside me. A flash of silver in the light showed a handcuff key on a small keychain was what the sheriff had tossed him.
