Chapter Six
"So, now we just wait while they get their stories straight?" Genov huffed, annoyance clear in his voice.
“If they were going to do that, they already have.” Lamar shrugged. “And we don’t have enough for a warrant, so, yeah. We wait."
He glanced around the room that Mandy had asked them to wait in. "She could have made us keep chasing this witness instead of calling to tell us he’d be in this afternoon to meet with us. Relax.”
Genov sighed and rolled his eyes, clearly suggesting that his temporary partner was daft for believing that. He pulled out his cell phone and groaned again when Lamar shook his head.
"She also said no pictures."
"Fine," Genov said, shoving the phone back into his pocket. "I guess we can play twenty questions." When Lamar just rolled his eyes, he smirked. "You more of a truth or dare guy, Coop?"
Lamar was saved from having to answer by a tentative knock at the half-open door.
"Come in." He had to stop himself from doing a double take as a blond boy slipped through the opening, not even brushing the wood on either side. While it was no secret that Lamar slept on both sides of the blanket, it was rare for him to feel quite sodrawnto a male.
Especially one who looked so young.
"You're Ren?"
"Some call me that," the boy said softly, his eyes trained on the floor. "My given name is Aeren, sir."
The boy was slight of stature, but not skinny, with high cheekbones and delicate bone structure. When he looked up, Lamar caught a glimpse of remarkable golden eyes andhis honey-blond hair fell in soft curls to just above his collar.
He was absolutely stunning.
"How would you prefer to be addressed?" Lamar asked, his eyes drinking in the sight before him.
"However satisfies you, sir."
Lamar barely managed to suppress a shudder as his blood flooded south, filling his cock like a dam had suddenly burst. When he saw Genov watching him in confusion, he gritted his teeth and shook his head.
"Okay, Ren," Genov picked up the ball. "Can you tell us about your session with Paul Parker on Saturday night?"
The boy dipped his head. "He had a bad week. He’d been laid off and he needed cheering up."
"Okay," Genov said with a frown. "How did you cheer him up?"
Aeren looked confused. "The usual way."
"So, drugs and degrading sex?"
"No," Aeren said, looking alarmed and inching back toward the door. "I, ah, think Mandyshould be here."
"It's okay, Aeren," Lamar said softly, reaching one hand toward the youth. "I understand. You didn't do anything bad, right?"
"I didn't, sir," Aeren said quickly, his eyes flashing up to Lamar's as he laid his slender hand in Lamar's large one.
“Did something go wrong?” Genov pressed. “An accident and he got hurt?”
“No! He was fine when he left.” The fear in Aeren’s eyes deepened, and he turned pleading eyes on Lamar. “I just helped to center him. Can I show you?”
Genov raised a brow, holding his tongue when Lamar gave a slight shake of his head.
“You know I’m here on work, right? I can’t do anything sexual.”
The boy nodded and began to cross the room, tugging Lamar along behind him until he reached an overstuffed chair behind an ornate partition in the corner. As Aeren encouraged him to sit down, Lamar noticed that Genov had followed along and was watching with concern.
