Chapter Thirty-Four

Rafe

“Say that again?” I stopped reading the report in front of me and focused on the words coming through my cell phone. “He had how many pups with him?”

Holy fuck.

“Okay, Clint. I really don’t think you need to keep him locked up, but I’ll grab a team and be on my way.”

I disconnected the phone and shoved it into my pocket.

Pulling together a response team took longer than I expected. It seems that members of the Pup Protection Service weren’t necessarily as used to rush dispatches as the Fugitive Recovery team was.

Go figure.

“You want me on this, Alpha?”

“Naw.” I winked at Colby. “You’re off the clock. Why don’t you take the kids home and relax? I’ll probably be late.”

“Wake me up when you get in?”

“You got it.” I bent to steal a kiss and then headed out to meet with the team.

I left the PPS team to identify the kids and headed into get Sky’s story. As soon as I hit the front door, the stench of Alpha pheromones overwhelmed me. Wrinkling my nose, I raised a brow at Clint.

“He’s back?”

“And pissed,” Clint confirmed with a smirk. “When I refused to let Sky out, he locked himself in with him instead.”

All too familiar with the results of locking an Alpha up with his Omega, I knocked loudly on the outer door several times before I entered. Instead of the usual flurry of redressing that I’d expected, I found them spooned together on the cot, fully dressed and fast asleep.

I unlocked the cell door and left it open before backing out. After all, it wasn’t like I needed to disturb them.

Identifying the rescued pups ended up being a simple task. A missing being report had been filed on each of them, so after telling an agent how Darren had grabbed them, they were promptly driven home and returned to their packs.

Easy-peasy.

We were waiting for the last pup to be picked up when Colt and Sky resurfaced hand in hand.

“Caught up on your sleep, are you?” I asked with a smirk.

It fled quickly when I realized that Sky was trembling behind Colt and that the Alpha’s usual quick grin was nowhere to be seen. “Colt? What’s wrong? Is Sky hurt?”

“No.” Colt growled, his eyes narrowed. “We’re heading to the COPSD office to give his statement.”

“What?” My jaw dropped. “But I’m already here, Colt. Why would you want to drive all the way to the office?”

“We’re heading to the motel in town anyway, so it won’t be a problem.”

Behind him I could see Clint striding toward us. I could tell from the flare of Colt’s nostrils the instant he caught his brother’s scent.

“Stay with Rafe,” Colt snapped at Sky, spinning around to face Clint.

“But..” Sky stared as Colt stormed off, his clothing falling to shreds as his werewolf forced its way out.

“Well, he’s pissed,” I observed, patting Sky on the back. “This might be a little disturbing to watch. Do you want to come sit down and I’ll take your statement?”

“But..” Sky’s amber eyes filled with tears. “I didn’t steal those babies,” he whispered.
