I tossed the bandages back into the bag and pressed my shoulders to the man’s chest. When I sliced the bands at his wrists, he flopped over me. I lifted him carefully to avoid jolting the metal jutting free of his leg and maneuvered him into a fireman’s carry, heading for the door.
“Go with him, Sky,” I heard Colby order from behind me. “Get the door.”
The helicopter was touching down in the center of the road as I made it outside.
“Stay low!” I shouted to Sky, lowering myself to a walking squat to avoid the spinning blades. The door swung out and I climbed inside, laying Alexi carefully on the gurney that was already prepared. When I straightened up, I saw a familiar face in front of me.
“Well, I’ll be damned.” I accepted the proffered hand and pulled him to me for a hug. “Fucking good to see you here, Lars.” He steppedback and I leaned into the cockpit. “Briand! Thanks for the assist.”
Briand nodded, his usually serious face seemed at odds with his smile. “You riding along?”
I shook my head. “You have orders?”
“Drop off is at the Double B Resort in your neck of the woods.”
“Perfect. You have room for the Omega?” I gestured back to where Sky was weeping as Lars worked on Alexi.
“Of course.”
“Then I’m out,” I told him. “Got to finish what we started.”
Briand nodded. “Möge das Mondlicht deinen Rücken bedecken, Colt.“
“Yours as well, Briand. Thank you.”
With that, I stepped out and watched as the bird lifted off, the bright sun glinting off the shimmery dark gray paint. When it was finally out of sight, I turned back to the building and the job at hand.
