Chapter Twenty
Colt
Colby, Rafe, and I had finished with our meeting and had just kicked back with a beer – well, Rafe and I had each grabbed a beer while Colby sipped at a glass of milk – when my cell phone came to life.
"You done?" Clint's voice was unusually terse.
"Yeah, for now." I set my beer bottle down. "What's up?"
"You need to get your ass home," Clint ordered. "Now."
"On my way."
Shoving the phone back into my pocket, I passed my beer bottle to Rafe. "Duty calls. No sense in letting this go to waste."
Rafe chuckled and set it aside. "I emailed the details to Clint. Let me know as soon as you go over them with Sky?"
"Will do." I stood up and dropped my hand on Colby's shoulder. "Nice job on the new addition, man. He's gorgeous."
"Thanks," Colby grinned. "That's all you have to say?"
I snorted and rolled my eyes. "What? You wanna fucking brownie button for another brilliant rescue plan?" I shook my head. "So needy."
Colby barked out a laugh and flipped me off. "Fuck you very much, Colt."
I grinned and headed for my truck. "I'll get back with you as soon as Sky is up and about."
Before I'd made it that far, Rafe's cell phone buzzed, He growled after looking at the screen. Standing up, he grabbed both of the beer bottles and nodded toward his bike. "No need. It looks like I'll be right behind you."
I buzzed down the highway, occasionally chatting with Rafe through the Bluetooth connection in his helmet as he drafted behind my truck.
When I finally arrived home, I was surprised to see the lights on inside the house and members of the security force positioned on the porch. Shoving past them to get inside, I stopped short when I found Chloe and Sky snuggled together under a blanket on the couch. Clint was camped out in my easy chair, my nephews sleeping against his chest, and Trevor was flitting around in my kitchen.
"Why do I get the feeling that I missed something?"
A hand on my shoulder reminded me that Rafe was behind me and I moved farther into the room, allowing him to enter.
“Well,” Rafe observed. “This is cozy.”
Clint shot him an unamused look and stood up, carefully setting the sleeping kids in his seat. “Let me put these two down and I’ll fill you in.”
“Are you okay?” My question was for both of the Omegas, but my eyes were for Sky alone. He turned haunted eyes on me while Chloe smiled at him and answered for both. “Yeah. Thanks to Sky, we weren’t hurt, just scared.”
I nodded, worried about Sky’s unusually withdrawn manner. “I’m just going to step outside with Clint. I’ll be right back.”
Trevor poked his head out of the kitchen. “I’ve got them, Colt.”
“Thanks, Trev.” I shot him a grateful look. My brother-in-law truly was a boon.
“What the fuck were you thinking?” Clint hissed at me as soon as the door closed behind me.
Startled, I took a step back and collided with the wall. “What?”
My usually even-keeled brother was very clearly pissed. His hair and jaw were lengthening and his fangs were glistening against his lips. “You turned him and never taught him about the shift? That is the stupidest, most blatantly irresponsible thing I can possibly imagine! You’re smarter than that, damn it!”
Rafe stepped between us and held one hand up, trying to calm him. “Clint, relax. This isn’t going to help.”
I took a deep breath, forcing myself not to respond in anger. “It’s not like that, Clint. Doc didn’t think he was ready.”
