Ezra slanted me a smoldering look from beneath the wavy fall of his golden hair. “I like your mouth. And everything else.” He smoothed his hands over my chest. “The whole package.”

Two could play that game, and I gave his balls a squeeze. “I like your package. And much as I’d like to stay here in bed all day, I have to go home and change. I have a class and a patient today and need clean clothes.”

“Don’t. Have breakfast with me, and then we can both go to work. I need to get in early too. I’ve been a little distracted lately. My clients deserve the best I can give them, plus I have to figure out if I’m leaving the agency.”

“Would you really do that?”

“If I had to. I won’t let myself get pushed around again.” The stubborn tilt to his jaw was something new, and I liked it.

I couldn’t refuse. “You make it hard to say no.”

His mouth quirked in a smile, and a glint of that teasing light shone in his eyes. “That’s the plan, Stan. Now come on. We can decide what we’re going to say to Nettie tonight.” He nudged me. “Now that we’re pulling this off.”

I winced. “You’re never going to let me forget that, are you?”

“I don’t want to forget anything, most of all this night together. It’s not a game, not for me. I want this. Do you?”

No more doubts and insecurities. Not with Ezra lying next to me, the smell of our lovemaking in the air between us.

“I never stopped. Somehow I always hoped we’d find a way back to each other.”

“And here we are.” The tenderness of his smile broke my heart. “Let’s shower, and as for your comment, you can try and make it up to me.” He jumped out of bed and flashed me his bare ass before disappearing into the bathroom.

“However that might be.” I chuckled and followed him.

Chapter Twenty-One

My body ached with the kind of pleasure only a night of amazing lovemaking could give, yet I remained heartsick and broken over my parents’ betrayal. But like I told Roe, my clients deserved the best from me, and if that meant shunting my pain aside, so be it.

“Morning, Sunny.” I poked my head into his office and gave him a wave before entering mine next door. I tossed my briefcase onto the sofa and headed straight for the espresso machine. Multiple cups of coffee were necessary, as I hadn’t slept well. Men didn’t usually share my bed for a whole night, and the fact that it was Roe? Hell, I kept waking up every half hour, first to stare at him to make sure I wasn’t dreaming and that he really lay next to me, then to curve my body around his and fall asleep again.

“You’re here early.” Sunny lounged in the doorway. “I wasn’t sure you were even coming in today.”

“I’m here.” I wiggled the coffee cup back and forth. “And ready to rumble.” I downed the coffee and made another. “Ahh, that’s good.” I took the second cup with me to my desk and turned on my computer. Contracts lay stacked on the desk for me to review.

“You look different.” Eyes narrowed, Sunny peered at me from the opposite side of the desk. “Please don’t tell me you and that Pasco hooked up.” He wrinkled his nose as if smelling old milk. “You deserve more than a booty call.”

“Thanks for that. And Pasco is all right. He and I knew what the deal was. But no. I didn’t see him.” My fingertip traced the rim of the cup. “I was with Roe.”

“Daaaamn.” Sunny’s mouth fell open, and his eyes popped wide. “You and Roe? Together? Like…together, together?” He twirled his finger in a circle, and I raised my brows.

“Is that some kind of gesture I need to look up in Urban Dictionary or guess its meaning?”

Sunny’s lips twitched. “Stop acting like you’re an old man. You know what I’m talking about.” His brow furrowed, and he grew serious. “Are you sleeping with him?”

“Why, Mother, don’t worry. We used protection.”

But Sunny didn’t join in my laughter. “Ezra, come on. Did you and Roe hook up? Are things serious between the two of you?”

I thought…hopedthey were, but I wasn’t willing to say it out loud. “We’re taking it day by day.”

“Which says nothing.”

“I’m not ready to talk about it yet. Not that I’m shutting you out, but things came to light yesterday that Roe and I need to work through.” I remembered I’d told my mother I quit. What did that mean for my job? All my clients were through the agency and technically weren’t mine, so if I resigned, I would be left out in the cold, having to start from scratch.

Until my parents could explain to my satisfaction why I should still have a relationship with them, could I work on the contracts? That morning, I struggled with the right thing to do. I’d brought all these new clients to the agency since I’d moved here, and I owed it to them to give them the best damn representation they deserved and not to drag them into the messiness of my private life.

I also hadn’t planned on giving Sunny the details of the fight until later, but as a friend, more so even than as an employee, he needed to know, since my knockdown, drag-out with my mother had ramifications that touched him. While Sunny was my personal assistant, he worked for the agency. This was getting more complicated than I’d considered.
