He’d probably just used up all his energy stores for the next month, but he didn’t care.
He’d come.With Claire.
Becauseof Claire.
And he’d never been more grateful or more in awe.
She ran her hands down his back and grabbed his ass.“That was unbelievable.”
Nick had no words. They all ran together in his head in a wild jumble, but each and every one spoke of gratitude and primal need.
She had done this for him.
He prayed they could do it again, so he’d know it wasn’t a fluke.
She nibbled his earlobe.“You okay?”
“Yeah.”He rolled off her and smiled.
She ran a finger down his chest.“Did it feel good?”
“Claire, it was incredible. You’re incredible.I don’t even know what to say.”
“I’m glad it was to your satisfaction.”Her expression softened.“Thank you.”
“You don’t need to thank me.”
“No, I do.I’ve been lonely, and, well, you know…”
He caressed her cheek. She didn’t deserve to feel lonely, and he didn’t ever want to hear those words come out of her mouth.
Claire had done something to him.It was as if a switch had been turned on, and he didn’t ever want to be in darkness again.
Like a surfer who had just caught the biggest wave, Nick wanted to ride it to shore then paddle back out to sea again, drunk on adrenaline and power.
He sounded a lot like someone who wanted a relationship.
Nah.He was getting ahead of himself.
There was no way they could manage a relationship, given his work situation.
“I’m just going to use the washroom,” he said.“Can I get you anything?”
“I’m fine, thanks.”
Was it his imagination, or had the warmth disappeared from her voice?
Maybe she was just tired.
She looked away, toward the window, into the night sky.
Away from him.
All at once, Nick got the sense that a wall had been erected. It might not be high or particularly sturdy, but it was still a wall.
Any triumph he’d felt a couple of minutes ago fizzled. What was the use in celebrating his dick’s achievement when Claire had that faraway look in her eyes?
Maybe he was imagining things.
