She nodded. “If I can’t be with you, then I’ll trust Sequan to watch your back.” She turned to the man in question. “Don’t let her die.”
He chuckled. “I will protect her with my life.” He licked her face once more. “Find us when you can.”
Toya nodded, and then turned and went back to her parents. “Let’s go.” The trio turned and ran towards the edge of the field. They were going to circle in, and check everyone.
I turned to Sequan. “Are you okay with this?”
He chuckled. “Yes, my Queen. I know you taught her how to fight. She has her parents with her, and she is heading away from the main fight.” He bumped my shoulder. “Let’s go find your parents.”
We started running, but a thought popped into my mind, so I turned slightly to the left. “Before we head in, we have one area to check first.”
“Why?” He questioned me, which I felt was a good quality to have as a guard. Blind faith didn’t sit right with me.
“Because Rowan was this way when I checked from above. I want to grab him before we fight to the main house.” I sent a silent prayer to the goddesses watching over me.Please keep him safe.
Megan ran out of the trees. He’s still over there. Erubus is expecting you.
Nix pushed more power into our legs, and Sequan panted beside us, trying to keep pace.
“Holy shit, you’re fast.” Sequan grunted as we leapt over body after body. I laughed as we ran, but my blood ran cold when I saw the group in front of us. Rowan was in the center, and he was barely holding on.
I started attacking before I could think. My mate was in the center of this death ring of attackers, and I had to get to his side.Megan!I screamed, and I watched her wince. Start funneling him power. He’s weak and not healing.
Okay! She ran back into the trees. And soon I felt the pull of power, and my stomach untwisted. Rowan’s head snapped up, and I saw a little panic enter his eyes.
“GO!” He bellowed at me as I grabbed another wolf and shook it. Sequan dodged in next to me, and together we started tag teaming the wolves from the back. “I said leave me!” Rowan screamed again after he had swiped the face off a wolf trying to sneak in from behind.
I refused to answer him or even look at him. He wasn’t going to convince me to leave him here, ready to die at the edge of the fight. “Stupid man.” I growled lowly as I raked my claws down another’s flank.
It took a few deaths before the crowd realized we were attacking from the back. Some turned to face us, but they were no match for Sequan or me. The wolves surrounding Rowan were trained. These weren’t typical rogues. “These are trained guards.” Sequan jumped over my back as he said it, tackling another wolf.
“I was just thinking that.” I bit off a paw, earning a screech of pain from the she-wolf in front of me. I spat it out and dove for the kill. I watched the light fade from her eyes, and I felt nothing. “I’m going to need you to keep attacking back here.” I shout over the snarls from the wolf in front of me.
Sequan quickly glanced at me. “What do you mean?” He tackled a wolf trying to sneak up on me. He snapped the male’s neck and dropped him to the ground right as I ran back a few steps. He turned to look at me, giving me the perfect angle I needed.
“Just keep attacking.” I yelled as I sprinted at him. He braced himself for an attack that wasn’t coming, but it gave me the opportunity to launch myself up into the air.
“Amy!” Sequan yelled after me, but I was already airborne. I flew over the wolves circling and attacking Rowan.
I was nearly to him when a wolf tried to jump at me, his teeth snapping near my paw, but I slashed my claws at him just in time and opened up four deep claw marks across his face. I felt his eye give way under my hit, and once again I gagged.
Nix chortled at my reaction. This is war, and you are squeamish.
Rowan turned and did a double take right as I landed on the wolf about to attack him. My teeth found the back of its neck and I bit right through it, the head dropping from the weight. His mouth dropped open as I dropped the chunk of flesh near his feet. “Did you just jump over everyone, land on a wolf’s back, and almost bite completely through its neck?”
I tilted my head. “It was about to bite you.” I just shook my head as I turned away, positioning myself on his back.
He choked for a second. “You said that as if it were an explanation.”
I lunged for another wolf, biting and scratching as it tried to run. My claws sunk into his flank, and I ripped off a leg, flinging it off to the right. “Because it was.”
I lost track of how many wolves I went through, but eventually the fighting slowed. Sequan broke through and joined us in the center. He had a few bite marks, but most looked superficial.
Realizing that Rowan was no longer alone and an easy target, the remaining wolves grew cautious. They all turned and fled, leaving the three of us alone to catch our breath. I looked over the field that we were in, and the only fighting that was still going on was in front of the pack house. I could see a ton of wolves still trying to fight their way into the pack house, and another group of wolves still defending it.
“Should we head over to the pack house?” Sequan was catching his breath, and I quickly looked him over. His wounds were already healed, and he was ready to go.
I turned to my mate, and I could see the wounds slowly healing on his body. “Why are you healing so slowly?”
