“Damn, my brother should be hearing this. This could be his child, and he’ll regret missing these moments… keep that playing, please.” Onyx took his phone from his pocket and opened the voice memo app. He held his phone near the machine and recorded.

“I’ll get you guys a few pictures of the little nugget printed out.”

“Give us a bunch of ‘em too.”

“Yes, sir.” The doctor smiled and obliged Onyx’s request, printing off more sonogram pictures than she normally would. “Ms. Munroe, you can go ahead and get redressed. I want to keepyou up here on the monitor a little while longer for observation, but you should be fine.”

Yanna sat up on the bed as Troi handed her her clothes.

“Can y’all go check on my mumma for me? I’ll be okay down here.”

“Yea, I’ll go check on her, but um… Onyx talked to Dr. Zuma, and since neither of us can do it, he’s going to get preliminary testing done to see if he’s a match.”

Yanna’s head swiveled towards Onyx, tears automatically welling in her eyes. “Seriously, Onyx?”

“Yea. If she don’t get a liver, yo ass just gone keep stressing. Gotta keep yo mind right for the sake of my niece or nephew.”

“Maybe,” Yanna replied solemnly.

“What you mean, maybe? Yanna, I don’t give a damn about no paternity test or DNA…youwill still be my family, regardless. That baby will be my family, regardless. Let’s make this my first and last time having to explain that to you.”

“Okay, I hear you.”

“Good, I’mma run up there and get started. Hit one of our phones if you need something before then.”

“I will, and seriously, thanks. Both of y’all.”

“It’s what family is for.” Troi offered her cousin a smile before her, and Onyx exited the exam room.

“Oh shit, when you get here?” Onyx questioned when he stepped off the elevator and found Kas standing there.

“A lil’ minute ago. Mumma down there with Troi Baby and Ms. Kamilla.”

“Yea? Mumma made you come with her?”

“Hell yea, talking about she didn’t trust me in the house by myself. Fuck she thought I was gone do?”

“Ain’t no telling.”

“What happened to her mumma?”

“She damn near drank herself to death, that’s what. She need a liver transplant, but because of her drinking, they can’t put her on the list.”

“And that’s what you’re going to do right now? Get checked?”

“Yea… Baby not a match, and neither is her mumma. Yanna is pregnant, so she can’t donate liver.”

“Fuck her tramp ass at?”

“On a different floor being examined. She passed out.”

“What? Is she ight? Is the… her baby okay?”

“She good. The baby is good,” Onyx responded, entering the room he was instructed to go to for his testing.

“Oh, my God!” The phlebotomist screamed when Onyx and Kas entered the room. “One of the nurses told me THEE Onyx was on his way up here for testing, but I thought she was mistaken. I can’t believe it’s really you, I’m… I’m Carina.”

“Nice to meet you, Carina.” Onyx flashed Carina his award-worthy smile while sticking out his hand for her to shake.
