He laughed.

“That’s shitty luck—even for him. I guess we know who is the unluckier in the pair.”

Yeah, he could say that again.

As for his response, Greyson laughed too, trying not to let on that this went deeper.

If he gave even the slightest away, Gabe would start sniffing around, and that was the last thing they needed.

“Well, it gets worse. He recognized the victim. It’s someone he went to training with in Quantico. That’s who the dead body belongs to.”

Gabe paused.

“Wait. Are you saying he found a dead Fed on the beach, and he knows the actual person?” he asked.

Well, when he said it that way, it made it sound kind of suspicious and questionable.

“Yeah, that’s what I’m saying.”

Oh, boy.

“Oh, Jesus. He knew the guy. That’s bad.”

Yeah, Greyson knew exactly what he was thinking, and what the man was going to allude to.

“Yeah, I know.”

Gabe was quiet.

“What are you thinking?” he asked, waiting for it.

He went there.

“Are we sure he didn’t kill the guy, and he’s trying to cover his tracks?” he asked.

Greyson had been right. He was betting that the man would go here, because they all investigated shit, or had at one time.

“Gene? Cantrell? The Gene who works here? The man who solves cases and is a good agent?” he asked, not using the one piece of information he knew would vindicate him.

He wasn’t alone.

Yeah, Gabe knew how that sounded, but old habits die hard.

“The person who finds the body, tends to be the one who left the body. We live by that motto, Son. So, I have to go there.”

Greyson had walked them right into this one, and he knew it. Only, the other options were worse for Gene and Ethan.

It was a pain in the ass to have to play chess with Gabriel Rothschild. For the most part, he created the game, and knew it well.

“Sir, the victim was found in the water. I saw the body. It’s bloated, and it’s been in the water a day or two. Gene literally flew out this morning. He said goodbye to me as he went to the airport. Ethan left yesterday evening to head West. There’s no way Gene did this. The agent that was found died well before Gene leftPhilly.”

That calmed Gabe down.

The last thing he wanted was one of his agents doing stupid shit and drawing attention to the FBI. The president was antsy with all of the changes Director Moore had implemented.

And with good reason.

“Okay, then, he’s cleared on that front. You know it’s nothing personal. We have to clear the person who finds the body first. I like Cantrell’s moxie, and the fact that he can wrangle the cowboy. I’m basically team Gene.”
