The man introduced himself.

“I’m Captain Adrian Marrero. I run this nut farm,” he said.

Corbin continued the introductions, since he wanted Will to feel like he wasn’t being ignored.

“This is Counsel,” Corbin said. “William Barker. He’s an assistant DA.”

The man shook his hand.

“Oh, you came with a lawyer. That’s telling me this is going to be an interesting one.”

Corbin laughed.

“Aren’t they all when the FBI is involved?”

That made the man laugh.

“Yes, yes, they are.”

With that, he waved them back to his office. “I was surprised that you came here. Whenever we deal with the FBI, it’s mostly Agent Shand. What’s going on?” he asked, taking a seat behind that desk.

Oh, well, yeah, about that.

Corbin had some bad news for him.

“Well, Captain Marrero, last night, Agent Shand’s body was found on the beach. Unfortunately, he’s dead. We are just waiting on final ID from the FBI ME, but he’s been ID’d by a coworker from a tattoo.”

The man’s eyes went huge.

Yeah, they knew that look.

They were thinking that too.

“Holy shit! I just saw him Friday. He stopped here around six, and handed me a report. He was working on a case, and we requested it back due to circumstances.”

Corbin lifted a brow.

The man must have known what was coming because he didn’t hesitate to tell them.

“A judge passed us jurisdiction since the dead cop was from our house, so he was handing it off. We appreciated that the FBI didn’t fight too much on this one.”

Well, yeah.

Corbin knew that the FBI was running thin when it came to agents. Thus, why he was going to be tied to thePhillyunit for the next three years or so.

Now, Corbin was curious.

Dead cop?

“And did he say where he was going by any chance? You’re the only person who might have an insight into where he headed after meeting with you.”

The man was to the point.

“No, he didn’t. He was dressed in normal clothes, and he was in a good mood. He passed off some notes in a report, and then headed out. It was a very short meeting. Honestly, I was curious why we did it in person. All it would have taken was an email of the report.”

Corbin listened.

“He came in, passed it off, and then headed out. He was a nice guy, and I’m sorry for the FBI’s loss. Jarod was a decent dude.”
