When Corbin and Will arrived at the police station, it was crazy, and that’s likely why they were given an escort right into the homicide bullpen. Then again, it could be that Corbin flashed his badge with his new creds.

FBI Liaison.

He’d been dying to do it too, and that just made him giddy.

How could it not?

Clearly, his man saw it, too, since Corbin was smiling like a lunatic.

He just couldn’t help it.

Not.

At.

All.

Honestly, it felt good to smile again. It had been weeks since he’d genuinely felt good, and here in Puerto Rico, he was feeling more human.

Maybe it was the weather.

Maybe it was the company, but either way, he was almost back to normal.

That was a welcomed feeling any day of the week after surviving what he’d been through.

The human spirit was tenacious, and Corbin fully believed that. What had tried to destroy him hadn’t been successful. Instead, it had only made him stronger—like titanium. Nothing would break him, since he’d already survived the worst thing in his life.

Corbin.

Was.

Back.

What broke his thoughts was the voice of the man he loved beside him.

“If you smile anymore, you’ll look like a serial killer,” Will whispered. “That’s probably a bad idea in the homicide unit of the police station.”

It got Corbin to laugh.

Oh, he imagined he did look crazy.

“I mean, if this is how they feel, sign me up,” he joked. “I know enough from watching Gene and Ethan to evade. You have to be tricky. I just might be able to pull that off, Will.”

His boyfriend shook his head. Someone was definitely in a good mood, and for that, he was glad.

As they waited, he was curious.

“Are you excited to go back to work when we get back?” he asked him.

Corbin nodded.

That was a definite.

For the first time, in over a month, he felt like he was standing on his own two feet. His therapist would be proud.

“I feel safe,” he admitted. “I was scared to go back out on my own, and now that I know Gene and Ethan will be there to help me out, I know they won’t let me get hurt again. I just need to lean on them a little while, until I can figure out how to find Corbin again—and not the Corbin who got me hurt.”

Will patted his leg.
