He shrugged, innocence in every inch of his posture. “It’s how I was raised.”
“I think I’d like your parents.” She tucked her head under his chin, inhaling the faint scent of sandalwood.
“They’re great.”
“Mine too.” She curled into the hollow of his chest, listening to the soft thump of his heartbeat.
He stroked her hair. “Want to know the first thing I thought about you?”
Her pulse fluttered. “You wanted to fuck my brains out?”
A startled laugh, and he shook his head. “Damn, was I that obvious?”
“I wanted to talk to you, but you were busy with Miss Brunette.”
“She spoke to me first,” he admitted.
“What red-blooded woman wouldn’t?” Skylar grinned. “I bet you have women hitting on you all the time.”
He exhaled a laugh. “I’m not having this conversation.”
“Chicken,” she teased, elbowing him in the ribs.
“It was good,” he grunted.
“Not that chicken.” She laughed.
“We should watch a movie. Then I’ll head out.” His tone turned gentle.
“Okay,” she said, tugging the sheet higher. “I wish you could stay.”
“Me too, darlin’, but my dogs would have a fit if I didn’t get home. Where is your cat?”
“Cosmo is in my office, for our first homemade dinner together.”
He nodded. “I hope there’ll be more.”
“Me too.”
He eased out from under the quilt and reached for his clothes. Skylar pulled her clothes on, then walked from the room to her office and opened the door. In an instant, a blur shot into the hallway, skidding across the hardwood, tail high.
Skylar laughed as Cosmo zigzagged through the dining room, vaulted onto the chairs under the kitchen table, darted back out,and sprinted along the top of the sofa cushion before collapsing in a fluffed-out heap. Rawley chuckled, settling beside her on the couch as the movie started.
“That is about all the running he’ll do. He’s done for a while now.”
After a couple of hours, Rawley stood, picked up his hat from the arm of the chair, took her hand in his, then walked to the door. He kissed her lips, and she slipped her arms around his waist.
“I really enjoyed dinner, but dessert…” He shook his head, his eyes so dark. “Damn.” He laughed when she punched his arm. “Seriously, I had a great time tonight.”
“Me too. We will do it again, right?” Skylar asked, tucking a strand of hair behind her ear.
“Dinner, or…” His voice dropped to a husky whisper.
“Both.” Her cheeks flushed pink in the dim hallway light.
“Now you’re talking. Hey, what are you doing tomorrow?” A grin lifted his lips that made her stomach flutter.
“Nothing. I take Sundays as my lazy day.” She leaned against the doorframe.
