RUNO
Daemon: Well, that lunch was depressing. Also, how the fuck did you get them to agree to dinner at the chief of police’s house?
Dark: I would like to ask the same question.
Finn: It’s just for looks, right?
“Kind of. We have to make this look real.”
Killian: Dad is going to have a fit. This won’t work.
“But it will,” I mused, patting the defrosted leg I had placed on the kitchen table. There was an arm right next to it and two beautiful lungs ready to be seasoned. Dad had been staying at the station for the better part of the two days I had moved back in. His absence was a gift that made this part of the plan easier. “You see, regardless of what he tries, I have something else to throw at him.”
Killian: Do we have to beg for the details? Dear Lord Runo, spare us the angst and tell us what’s going on.
The others cackled in my head as I snorted. “I’ve left everything as it is. My room still smells like death from the bitch I dropped in there. Dad cleaned it up but not well. And my murder board is up too. They’ll think he planned all this shit, especially with the freezer in the basement. I wiped it down and placed a few fingerprints from Dad along the outside. It’s perfect.”
Daemon: It’s kind of terrifying how well you’ve thought this out.
“I’ve been planning for years, Daemon.Years.We just got a little sidetracked along the way. Hey, why don’t you call Killian Primrose, anymore?”
Daemon: Feels like in bad taste when we know he isn’t all that innocent.
“Fair point. Oh, they’ll be here in a few minutes!” I scurried around the table to pull a few spices from the cabinet out, ones I thought Aeron would enjoy. Daemon was the creative one but I enjoyed dabbling in the cooking as well.
My phone interrupted me, a text from one of Samael’s guards watching Jade coming through. I had planned on calling her but the picture that came through next brought a smile to my lips. She’s really pregnant. Oh, good.
The timestamp on the hospital report was a day old so I knew Samael had had something to do with the delay in information. The next bit of information made me lose my smile. Because what did they mean that Jade had accidentally let slip some words to Tyrone and why the fuck was he even calling her?
I quickly dialed her number and waited for her to answer. It rang a few times before she finally picked up. “How’s the baby?” I thrust at her.
Jade sighed, already irritated with me. “I knew you’d call eventually, and no, we’re not talking about it.”
I leaned back against the fridge and folded my arms across my chest. “That’s fine. Let’s talk about you and Tyrone. Why the fuck would you say my men grew up in foster homes?”
She grimaced. “Runo, it just slipped. I didn’t say anything else, okay?”
“I had everything planned after you left, but now I have to make more amendments, and someone else is going to get it.”
“Look, just leave me out of it, okay?” she snapped. “I won’t pick up if he calls again.”
I chuckled, the sound a little more sinister than I had planned. “The damage is already done, but I’ll leave you out of it. I won’t even call you again.”
A bout of silence fell between us before she spoke again. “You say that as if I’ll choose to call you myself.”
“Well, duh. You will. You’ll tell yourself you won’t need to, but you will.”
I hung up just as the basement door creaked open, my men strolling into the foyer. “Perfect timing! I ordered pizza, but I think we’ll really like dinner.”
The scene had erupted into domestic bliss, Aeron’s version of whatever the fuck was on the table, an absolute divine entrée that I would never get tired of. My men were throwing quips back and forth, letting me sink into my own head as I watched them pick up some of that charm I first experienced when we met.
Dark:Why are you playing like you’re dying, Runo?
Daemon: You’re not even dying.
Finn: Is this just to fuck with their heads or are you in a mood?
Killian: It’ll be different because you’ve got men that love you.
