“Oh,” is all that comes from her. Silence falling around us, it’s not uncomfortable though. I know I just dropped a bomb on her, and it’s expected for her to take some time. “You know, I still have all the records, journals, and books she had. It was one of the things I kept after they died.” She’s quiet again for multiple minutes.
“I’m starting to think they didn’t die in a freak accident like the police said, and I’m not sure how to feel about that,” she whispers.
“What makes you think that?” I hesitantly ask her. Unsure where she got this conclusion from.
“Well, when it cornered me in front of the bakery, it talked about scenting me four years ago and killing those people. I think the people it was talking about were my parents,” her voice trembling. I rack my brain, trying to remember the first conversation I had with it around the holidays when it threatened me at our house, and what it said. The beast talked about hunting her for years.
“I think you’re right. It had said something similar to me at one point. I’m sorry. It’s not even supposed to be on Earth. They are meant to stay in hell unless with their master.” I hugged her close to me again, knowing my words were not enough in this situation. There wasn’t much I could say that would change the past or make a difference. Her parents were dead because a hellhound had caught her scent in the car while they were driving.
She starts sobbing as the truth is finally revealed. It took her four years to find out what happened to her parents. I bet that was difficult on her, never knowing and having a story that didn’t add up. “At least I know the truth now,”she whispers, another sob wracking her body. I knew stress wasn’t good for the baby, but she needed this moment. “It’s a weight off my shoulders.” Another quiet minute passes as she thinks through her feelings. I know she has difficulty collecting her thoughts at times and putting them together. The least I could do was give her room to do that. “I can finally have closure. There are no more what-ifs.” I nod my head in understanding.
“I’m here for you Blair. Whatever you need, in whatever capacity. If I can provide or do anything for you, please let me know. You don’t have to do this alone,” I give her head a brief kiss.
She sniffles but finally calms down, no longer sobbing. “Thanks. I don’t know what I would do without you, big guy,” her voice watery from all her emotions.
“I’m the one who should be thanking you, little one. I don’t know what I would do without you. You’re the light in my life. I would be a very, very lonely demon without you. I’m fortunate you gave me a chance,” I start getting choked up.
I’ve come to the realization a few times that I am very fortunate she left her home and found her way to me. Not only did I find my fated mate, but I also have a baby on the way. Without her, I would have spent the rest of my life alone, and I’m not sure how I would have dealt with that. Although it would have been worse knowing she was my mate and her not wanting me and rejecting me. That probably would have broken me and killed me.

Chapter 30 - Blair
Ever since the attack, Asmodeus won’t let me out of his sight. Whatever room I am in, he somehow finds his way there too. I also stopped working at the bakery for now. Thea completely understood and said I could start back up whenever I wanted to, and that there was no rush. I swear this woman was an angel.
Even though his cake was ruined as well as his birthday, I still wanted to do something for him. I had awoken on his birthday, March third, which was probably one of the best presents for him now that I think about it. What’s better than your mate waking up and living after being attacked and almost killed? But that wasn’t good enough for me; he deserved better, and I was going to give it to him.
Thea sent me the recipe for the cake through text for me to copy at home. I was planning on making the cake again, as well as dinner. He was going to be busy today with his work outside in his garage. It gave me the opportunity to use the kitchen without any distractions, and provided me the chance to surprise him.
At lunch time, before he could even make it into the house, I went outside with a plate of food for him. I made him a grilled ham and cheese sandwich with tomato soup and a side of cut veggies. It wasn’t fancy, but it was tasty and filling. I hung out with him while he ate and then brought the plate and bowl back into the house with me as he continued his work. He said he still had a few more hours of work left and would probably be done by five. That gave me plenty of time to cook dinner and have it ready by the time he was done.
The cake was baked and chilling in the fridge. I already made the icing, which would go on last. I decided to make lasagna for dinner. Have I ever made one before? Nope, but it shouldn’t be that hard, right? There were numerous ingredients in this dish. I made an absolute mess of the kitchen while trying to layer the lasagna in the pan and get it ready for the oven. Once I placed the lasagna in the oven, I grabbed the icing and cake from the fridge, ready to frost.
While the lasagna was cooking in the oven, the scent of the air changed, permeating throughout the house. The ripe tomatoes, dried spices, and baked cheese were robust and overpowering. I heard a groan when the sliding glass door opened, and Asmodeus came walking into the kitchen.
He had a quizzical look on his face as he came over to me and wrapped me up in his strong arms. He gives me a tentative kiss on the cheek, placing one of his hands on my belly. I could feel the baby move around, who must have been aware of his presence as well.
“What is my beautiful mate up to? Not working too hard I hope? The little one seems to be excited.” He gazes down at my belly, the baby kicking beneath his palm as he holds it reverently. I can feel his warmth pressed up against my back, making me melt back into his embrace.
“I wanted to surprise you actually.”
“Oh, is that right? Do tell,” he purrs into my ear, as he kisses down the column of my neck, every kiss sparking a small flame.
“Well, your birthday was ruined, and I wanted to make up for it. I wanted to do something special for you. You deserve it, and you deserve to be celebrated on your birthday. You’re such an old man at this point, and we don’t know how many more years we have left with you.” I try really hard to be serious, but I can’t hold it together; I burst out laughing at my joke.
I turn my neck where I can see his reaction. He shakes his head at me as he rolls his eyes and chuckles along. “You’re ridiculously silly. I love it. But… I don’t think I ever mentioned this but now that you are mated to a fertility demon, I share my nearly everlasting lift with you, mate. We have more years together than you think,” he winks at me.
I stop dead in my tracks, my brain on repeat with his words. I gasp out suddenly, turning around abruptly, nearly knocking the food off the stove. “Are you serious?! You’re joking, right? How is that even possible? How is that going to work? Won’t people get suspicious?” I continue my tirade or random questions, firing them off at warp speed. My brain couldn’t comprehend this. I was nearly immortal now?!
“Slow your roll there, you’re about to knock some of the food off the counter. Take a deep breath for me and let it out.” he takes a deep breath in, and lets it out slowly with me. “It’s okay. Are you not excited and happy to get more time with me?”Great, now I hurt his feelings.I groan at myself,I was the worst.
“That’s not the case at all!” I nearly shout at him. “I’m just worried about our baby, are they also going to live that long? Are we going to have to watch our child die while we continue to live? I don’t want to be a part of some human witch hunt where people try to kill us!” His eyes go wide at my outburst.
He rubs my arm gently, calming me down. “Well, to your first question, yes any children we have will have the same longevity we do. Then to your second point, no we wouldn’t have to watch them die. For the witch hunts… Well, if anything, we can just move around or even go to the demon realm if you want. Things aren’t how they used to be five hundred years ago.”
I roll my eyes at him, pointing my finger at his chest. “You don’t know that. But I’m happy to hear that we can live for eternity together as a family. That honestly makes me feel relieved. I’m not sure how I feel about living forever; that seems a bit much. At least I get to live forever with you and our baby.” I look up at him, standing on my tiptoes so I can reach, as kiss him.
“Now, I made you dinner and dessert, big guy,” I murmured against his lips, turning myself back around, focusing back on dinner and making sure not to fuck it up. There was always a chance with me, and it wouldn’t have been the first time I messed up cooking. Heath used to always joke that I was a terrible cook because I would always forget food in the oven or forget to set a timer. This had to be perfect!
