“Yeah, man, we can. But how did they find you out here in the first place? Do you know?”
“I don’t know, and it’s really bothering me not knowing. I kept his phone in the safe and the only communication he had was emailing his sister.”
“He went through the secure portal, right?”
“I guess so. I don’t know. He had to log into his email account so his sister wouldn’t get suspicious.”
Os looked at me like he’d never seen me before, shook his head, and then went back to my computer. He went from one screen to another, fingers flying over the keys faster than I could follow.
“You did everything right, but it looks like they tracked back from his sister’s account and were able to break in and find your location that way. I’m tweaking your firewalls and changing your settings so no one can do that again. Luckily there are only a handful of people who can do that kind of thing. Even luckier for you, I’m one of them so I can prevent it from happening again. I’ll bet that asshole Christos did it. He’ll do anything for a buck these days.”
“Dude, you need to let that shit go. It’s over and done with. You learned a lesson now move on.”
“Yeah, I know. I get it, I do, but when you’re so sure you know somebody, and then they turn out to be the complete opposite, that fucking burns.”
I put my hand on his shoulder, squeezing him to let him know I understood.
“I know, man, I know. Christos fooled all of us. Well, everyone but Raven. I have my problems with that little shit, but he can read people like a billboard in Times Square.”
I gave his thick shoulder one more squeeze, then slapped him in the same spot.
“Enough about the asshole ex, call Eagle and see if we can hitch a ride. I want to get Worthy back and take care of the ultimate asshole ex in history. That cunt deserves everything I have planned for him.”
Os got up to retrieve his phone, brought up Eagle’s contact info for his private phone, and hit the screen to call. While doing all this, he kept talking.
“While we’re going on this rescue mission, I think we need to hear what the fuck is going on with you and this Worthy guy. We thought it was weird you put out an announcement that he was untouchable but chalked it up to your moral code. If he were innocent, you’d protect him, simple as that. But seriously man, this isn’t like you. What is he to you?”
As I heard the phone in his hand ringing, I decided to keep my answer short and sweet. There was really only one answer anyway.
“He’s mine. That’s all you need to know, Os.”
Os nodded with a slight smile on his face, then began talking to Eagle about flights, me and everything that had happened in the last few hours. I still hadn’t had a shower yet. I’d only had time to take some painkillers before Os had gotten here ready to track. I decided I needed to get clean and try to clear my head, now that the pounding was settling into a dull ache. Before heading into my bathroom, I took one last look at the computer screen and the small blip moving slowly down the California highway.
I’ll get you back, Worthy. Just hold on, I’m coming.
