“Okay.” She yawns and closes her eyes, and before I blink, she’s fast asleep.

CHAPTER FIFTY-FIVE

GETTING HEALTHY

I’ve beenat Sam’s place for a little over a week. I had my one-week follow-up visit yesterday, and the doctor thinks the cut on my leg isn’t healing as well as he’d like, so I have to wait one more week before returning to work. Sam has been in and out the last few days, busy with a new celebrity client. After the first couple of days at home with me, he started to venture out to his real office for one or two hours at a time.

I’ve kept myself busy by making a few phone calls and seeing some visitors. I spoke to Bobby on the phone Wednesday after the attack. I called the toy store after Theresa told me he was working. When he answered, I started crying immediately but I was able to muster up some words. “Bobby? It’s me, MacKenzie.”

“Oh, hey, MacKenzie. When are you coming back to work?”

“In a week or two. Uh, listen, Bobby. I need to tell… say thank you.”

“What for?”

I let out a little laugh. “For saving my life, silly. If you hadn’t been there, that guy would have killed me.”

“Well, you need to watch out for him. He’s still around. Didn’t you think he looked like a zombie?”

“A zombie? I thought he looked like a ghost.” My goodness, this is a weird conversation.

“I guess. But he looks a lot like the zombies inDie2Nite.”

“Die tonight?”

“My favorite video game.”

“Oh, right.” I don’t remember what he’s talking about, but I’ll go with it.

“Well, I won’t keep you, I just wanted to let you know how grateful I am that we’re friends.”

He’s quiet a little too long. “Just friends?”

“Just friends, Bobby. One of mybestfriends.”

“Bestfriend? I’ve never had abestfriend.”

“Well, you’ve got one now. You’re like my little brother.”

“I’ve never had a sister before.”

I laugh lightly. “You’ve got one now.”

“Okay. That’s cool. I’ll see you when you get back. Don’t forget to be alert.”

Oh, my God. He told me several times to be alert, to be aware of my surroundings, and a few other things. He was warning me to watch out for that sicko. “Thank you, Bobby. I’ll see you soon.”

“Okay. Bye.”

I hang up and blink back the tears. “He tried to warn me, and I was oblivious.”

That afternoon, Theresa and Diane stop by to see me for a few minutes. They’d heard most of the story but want to hear it from me. Theresa beams with pride when I tell her about Bobby, and I get a little emotional about it all over again when I say, “I owe him my life, literally.”

CHAPTER FIFTY-SIX

STIR-CRAZY

I haven’t setfoot outside his place except for my doctor visit, and I’m about to go nuts. I’m stir-crazy. None of this is helped by the incessant banging, sawing, and drilling that’s going on next door. It’s making me want to run for the hills.
