“I suppose.”
“Good. See you tomorrow night. Text me your address.” As I leave the store, I realize where we left things. With her thinking about relationships and me, well, talking about the opposite. I guess time will tell which one of us is going to prevail on that point.
I hear her mumbling something as the door shuts behind me, but I ignore it. I’ve got a skip in my step knowing I’ve got a date with a hottie tomorrow night. Now, I’ve got to figure out where we’re going. Time to give Jackie a call. Maybe I’ll include Zoe. I’m sure she’ll be happy to get involved. I roll my eyes as I start up my bike. Of course, she’ll be ecstatic to get all up in my business.
ChapterThirteen
Prudence
“That’s it.That’s all of it.”
It took two glasses of wine, but I’ve gotten the entire story out about Travis, Barbie, and Celeste. I’ve also filled Laura in on Nate and his “I don’t know what we’re doing” stance. She’s been quiet throughout, which is a bit out of character for my outspoken best friend. So, I wait. As I do, I ponder… I wonder if they make a wine IV. I could sure use one tonight. My body hurts, my face is sore, and I had a shit day.
Sipping her wine, she’s looking into my eyes. It’d be unnerving if it were anyone but Laura. I know she’s working on the best way to say what’s on her mind.
“First of all…” she begins. “…fuck Travis.”
I nod. I knew she’d say something along those lines.
“You suspected he was cheating before you divorced him. Even though it hurts, who the fuck cares at this point? Good riddance to bad rubbish, as they say. You got out––that’s the most important point.”
That’s true. It still hurts knowing my suspicions were correct, though. Part of me held onto hope that I was mistaken and that Travis wasn’t an even bigger dickface than I thought.
Wrong again, Prudence.
“As for Celeste,” she growls. “Next time she’s in town, I’m going to steal a car and run her over with it. Then, I’ll drive it into the lake wearing scuba gear so I can escape easily.”
“Wow, that’s frighteningly premeditated.”
“Yeah, well, I’ve given her demise a lot of thought over the years.”
“Maybe death by diarrhea medicine would be the Karma she needs.”
“Fuck,” Laura snap. “I forgot about that. Now I really want to flatten her.”
Pouring myself a third glass, I sit back on her oversized sofa and curl my feet beneath me. I’m finally relaxed. I could fall asleep right now, except she’s launched into her thoughts on Nate. I listen as she speculates on the kind of man he is.
“He’s not a relationship kind of man.”
I argued, “Except, he was married once. He used to be a relationship guy. I used to be a relationship person, but now I’m not.”
“Then just use him for sex. That’s what he wants to do with you. Why can’t you just let go and enjoy yourself? He’s into you.”
“He seems to be.”
“Which reminds me.” Laura jumps up from the chair that matches her floral sofa and races out of the room. She’s only gone a couple of minutes. “Here.” She hands me a small pink shopping bag.
“What’s this?”
“Just look.”
I peek in the bag and groan. “You bought me underwear?”
“It had to be done. Wear them tomorrow night because he’s going to see your knickers no matter what. They might as well be sexy.”
Reaching into the bag, I grasp the item with my thumb and first finger. Dragging them out slowly, I wince when I see black silky fabric surrounded by lace.
“They’re boy shorts. Comfy and sexy all rolled into one.” She reaches behind her and produces the matching bra from God knows where. “Pair them with this.”
