“Please?”

Without another word, I press the buzzer and say, “I’m in 2B.”

“I know.” Of course, she does. My name and apartment number are written on the wall down there. Except, she adds, “I remembered where you lived.”

Past tense. Meaning, she remembered where I lived before my father died.

Holding open the door, I look back at my bed. Barney’s now on top of the sheet. His eyes are focused on me. “It’ll be okay.”

Who am I kidding? This is going to be a shit show.

ChapterThirty-Nine

HUDSON

“Honey? I’m home.”I singsong as I enter Willa’s apartment. I drove halfway across town to get Gino’s lasagna. It’s one of our favorite meals.

Glancing to the kitchen first, I’m about to set the food onto the counter when something catches my eye. It’s a person sitting on our unmade bed. A person I’ve never seen before. It doesn’t take a genius to see who it is though. Willa looks just like her. “Hello.” I say with a smile. With the food down, I walk to her, hand extended. “I’m Hudson.”

“Hudson?”

“Hudson Adler. Willa’s boyfriend.”

“Willa has a boyfriend?”

“Yes.” I look around the tiny place. “Where is she?”

“Gone.”

“Gone?” Shit. Shit-shit-shit. “Where?”

She shrugs. “No idea.”

She says it so casually I’m immediately incensed. Why is she acting like this is no big deal? “What did you do?”

“Do?” her voice suddenly defensive. “Nothing.”

“Well, I believe that.” Snarky? Yes. Deserved? Also, yes.

Walking in a complete circle, I attempt to figure out what I should do. I have no idea where she would have gone. Bonnie’s? No. She’s in Cancun with Carl.

I glance at the spot where she sets her purse. It’s there, which means she’s on foot. With that information, I’ve got a good idea where I can find her. Before I go though, I’ve got something I need to do.

“I think you should go.”

“Why?”

“Because you’ve obviously upset Willa.”Again.“You need to give her space.”

“I’m only here for one more day and…”

Onemoreday? “How long have you been in town?”

“A week.”

“You’ve been here a week, and this is the first you’ve attempted to see Willa?” This woman is unbelievable. Sure, I know she probably needs psychological help, but she’s not my concern. Willa is.

She sighs. “Willa appeared to be upset about that too.”
