I smile. Of course, I’d take Bonnie. “Sure.” The pair have been seeing each other a lot since the birthday party and I think it’s getting serious.
“Our fourth person should be Hudson.”
“Oh. I’m sure he’s got plans.”
She’s too busy jumping up and down and clapping like a fool. “It’d be a double date.”
“No,” I say, shaking my head. “Hudson and me, we’re not––”
Picking up my phone, she hands it to me. “Text him. Right now.”
“So bossy.” Still, I do it.
Me: Thank you for the gifts. Barney will love his catnip balls.
I don’t have to wait long. He responds right away.
Hudson: Did you just get them? I sent the cat toys last week.
Spencer. That fuckface.
Me: Long story.
Me: Um. Would you want to be one of my guests to the baseball game?
Hudson: …
It’s taking him a while to respond. Crap. I shouldn’t have asked him. Time to save face.
Me: I’m sure you already have plans.
Hudson: I’d love to come.
Me: Really?
Hudson: Really.
Hudson: Can I pick you up?
Me: No. Why don’t we meet next to the sculpture of the baseball mitt?
There’s a cool bronze sculpture outside the park of an old mitt. It reminds me of one my dad used to own.
Hudson: Perfect. See you then.
I wonder if my Kate what’s-her-name dress is good for baseball games?

WILLA
“McAllister Accounting, this is Willa Clariday. How may I help you?”
“Willa? This is Sonia. Sonia Moore-Andreesen.”
I haven’t spoken to her since the birthday party over a week ago. “Oh, hey, Sonia. How are you?”
“I’m great. Listen, I was wondering if you’d like to meet the girls.”
