Oh, he realized I was gone?
Wow. That’s rich.
“I’m calling my dad to give me a ride.”
“Why?” I look up, and he looks sincerely confused.
“Because you’re obviously over this date thing, and I’m not going to sit in there and be ignored.” While I lack confidence in some areas, I have an abundance of stubborn in others. And when I get angry, watch out.
Oh, and I’m a grudge holder.
Or I can be.
“I wasn’t ignoring you.”
I arch a brow and glare. “I see.” And I do. I see that he’s turned into every guy I’ve ever dated. Hell, he’s already lost interested in me and it’s only our first “real date.”
There’s only one man I can count on. Pressing my dad’s number, I place the phone against my face. He picks up on the first ring.
“Colly,” he says in his happy voice. “Long time, no see.”
“Hi, Dad. How are you feeling?”
“Great. Just great, puddin’.”
Puddin’. My other nickname. It’s not my favorite.
“Colette,” Sam says in a low grumble. “Hang up the phone.”
Shaking my head, I respond to my father. “What are you doing right now?” I need to ease into this. I can’t spook my dad.
“Just watching a game, honey. Why? You need your old man for something?”
“I…”
I feel his hand on mine. “Hang. Up. The Phone.”
“Hang on a sec, Dad.” Pulling the phone away from my face, I give Sam my very best angry face. “Do. Not. Tell me what to do.”
“Babe.” Sam’s voice softens a little. “I’m sorry. I get it. I fucked up. Let me explain.” He glances back at his vehicle. “In the truck.”
“That’s okay. My dad can come get me. You run along.” I make a shooing motion.
“That was my ex-wife.”
I blink a few times, trying to recall what he’d said about her.
And then it hits me.
“Oh.”
They broke up because…
She didn’t want kids.
