A small smile appears on his face. “I don’t know about that, Emma.”

The phone chimes in my hand as another text appears.

Emma:I mean, are you that desperate? I guess I could fuck you again. For old time’s sake.

“Jesus,” he mutters. “How are you even related? Does she know anything about you?”

“No.” I quickly begin to type my message.

Eli:I’m horny, yeah. Had a few…

I look up at Eli and mouth, “Sorry.”

He laughs. “Go for it.” He nods at the phone. “Let’s see if we can draw her out.”

That’s what I was going for.

Eli:Where r u? How soon can you get here?

Emma:Not far.

I stare at the screen. That little bitch. “She’s still in Madison.”

Eli:You remember where I live?

I don’t hit Send. “Oops.” I forgot I’m supposed to be texting myself. I quickly delete that text and write.

Eli:How long will it take you to get here? I’m pretty wasted.

Emma:You got a problem with whiskey dick or something? LOL.

“What’s whiskey dick?” The question is out of my mouth before even giving it some thought. Eli laughs. “Oh.”

Eli:Nah. How soon can you get here?

Emma:I’ll be there in ten.

“She’s ten minutes away?” I’m talking to myself. Where could she be and where has she been staying for two weeks? Things I want to know but am afraid to ask.

“Now what?” Eli’s question is valid.

“Well, let’s see what she does. Will she show up?” Only time will tell.

He scoffs. “You two havenothingin common.”

Except our parents.

We quickly clean up our turkey sandwich mess. “I’ll hide in the laundry room.” I point to the door right off the kitchen. From that vantage point, I’ll be able to see the front door as well as the living area.

“Here.” Eli grabs a dining chair and places it next to the dryer. “I want you to be comfortable.”

I blush a little at his gesture. He’s such a good guy. Oh, crud. I feel that stupid burn of tears again.

Eli can tell I’m getting emotional. “What’s wrong, babe?”

I repeat what I’d been thinking. “You’re such a good guy.”

He doesn’t respond to my statement. Well, he does, with a little kiss just as the doorbell rings.
