“Your roommate is pretty.”It’s the first thing I say the minute we step out of her apartment and by her reaction, I know it was the exact wrong thing to say.
Because she stops walking not three feet from her door. “Oh.” She’s blinking furiously and her face has turned a shade of pink I’ve only ever seen on a cupcake. “Do you want me to set you guys up?” She clears her throat. “You two would look perfect together.”
“Emma—”
I don’t get to finish because she’s already back at her apartment door with a key in her hand. “I should have thought of that.” She’s mumbling but I can hear her.
“No. Emma…”
In seconds, she’s got the door reopened and she’s stepped through. I follow her because I’ve got to do my utter best to fix this.
“You forget something?” Her roommate is sitting on the sofa with a remote in her hands.
“Uh.” Emma’s voice cracks. “He likes you.” Then, before I can say a goddamn word, she’s gone. She disappears into a door at the back of the apartment.
“What’d you do?” The roommate is now standing a foot from me. She looks angry. Really angry.
“Nothing. All I did was mention that you were pretty.”
“You idiot.” Her voice is a growl. I’m not going to lie, she’s intimidating. “You fucking, fucking idiot.”
“I didn’t mean it like it sounded.”
“How did you mean it, dumbass?”
“Wow. Knock off the insults. I was just making conversation.”
She rolls her eyes so hard it looks like it hurts. “Try talking about the goddamn weather or her hair or her dress. She tried hard to look pretty for you.” She growls again. “Have you ever gone on a date before?”
“Yes.”
“You must suck at it because the last thing you do is talk about another girl.” She stomps over the couch, picks up the remote, and turns off the television. “That’s dating one-oh-one.”
“She didn’t let me finish. I was thinking you’d be a good match for my teammate Cody.” But now that she’s ripping me a new asshole–– Wait, yeah, she’d be perfect for Cody.
“Cody Williams?” she asks with an arched brow.
“Yeah.”
Waving me off, she continues, “This isn’t about me. You need to go in there…” She points in the direction of the door Emma disappeared into. “…and try to salvage whatever this is you’ve got with Emma.” She points at me. “Wait. Do you want something with Emma?”
Do I want something with Emma? “Yes.”
“What do you want?” She’s still pointing. “If you’re just trying to get in her pants….”
“No.” I shake my head. “I can get laid anytime.”
With another hard eye roll, Carley sighs. “Please don’t say something like that to her.”
“I wouldn’t.” Well, I probably would since I keep putting my foot in my mouth.
“Go.” She gestures toward Emma’s door. “Tell her what your intentions are so she knows what’s going on with you two. No more misunderstandings.”
“Right.” I stare at her for a second, then I ask, “You want me to go into her room?”
“Knock first.” Carley mumbles something like “Fucking idiot” under her breath but I can hear her. Yep, she and Cody would hit it off.
