Nate
Fuck.
That’s the first thought in my head the second I hear the heartbeat. I was hoping to avoid this part of her pregnancy. The part that makes me realize this shit is real.
Time to get the fuck out of here.
Because if I don’t, I’ll get sucked into a situation I want nothing to do with.
No, I made a huge-ass mistake today.
But I’ve still got time. I can get out and never look back.
As soon as the tech packs up her shit. All that’s left is the doctor. I listen as she tells Maggy, us, that she’ll look over the results and be back shortly. The fucking second she steps out the door, I’m up out of my chair.
Halfway to the door, she says, “Goodbye, Nate.”
I look back at her quickly, then I’m out. I’ve got the door open and shut before another word can be uttered. As I stomp down the hall on my way to the waiting area, I run into Gus, literally. “Whoa, man. Where you goin’?”
“Out. The baby’s fine.” I glare up at the man. “Don’t fucking call me again.”
I get a look from him that would scare an ordinary man, but Gus could threaten to murder me right now, and all I’d do is welcome it. “You serious?” Now he looks incredulous.
“I’ve never been more serious.”
“Your loss, man.” He steps around me like he’s on a mission.
I watch him go, letting his words whirl around in my brain for a minute.
My loss?
He has no idea.

Maggy
“I’m not going to cry.”That man is not going to cause any more tears to spill from these frigging eyeballs. “Not gonna happen.”
“What’s not gonna happen?” Robin asks, stepping back into my room.
“Nothing.”
“Nate left?” Robin asks tentatively.
“Yep.”
“What did Bea say?”
“The heartbeat sounds good, but she’s going to look over the ultrasound. Plus, they just drew blood.” Right after Nate stepped out of the room, in came the vampire. “Once that comes back, we’ll know more.”
I straighten up my blanket, then look over at my best friend. “So…”
Holding up her hand, she gives me her version of stink-eye. It’s weak. Trust me. So, I just go ahead with my question.
“Why didn’t you tell me about Gus?”
“Because.”
