“I’m glad you brought her here, honey. We’re the best.” Then she winks at me.
“Yep. I know, Mom.”
“Alright.” Bea pats my arm. “Let me get this going, and I’ll be back soon.”
“Okay.”
As soon as she leaves, I turn my head to Gus. “Your mom runs the largest hospital in the metropolitan area?”
He nods. “Yeah.”
“Why didn’t you just text her or something instead of scaring the crap out of the orderly?”
Gus shrugs. “She doesn’t answer her personal phone at work.”
Ah. Makes sense. I’m still curious, though. “What does your dad do? Is he the president or something?”
That gets a chuckle out of Gus. “Nah. He’s a pilot.”
I nearly choke. “A pilot?”
“Well,” he shrugs. “I guess pilot isn’t the right word. He’s an aerospace engineer. He used to be a pilot. Now he just designs planes.”
I look at Robin, who merely shrugs. “So…” I hesitate to ask since my mind is already blown. “What doyoudo, Gus?” I assumed he worked for the biker gang—I mean, biker club—because he seems to be able to spend a lot of time at the shop helping Robin out.
“I don’t do much.” He shrugs. “I mess around with software.”
“Software?” I blink. “As in computers?”
“He’s developed a couple of apps,” Robin says, reaching out and taking hold of Gus’s hand.
“Apps?” I can’t believe this. “Would I know these apps?”
Robin smiles like a Cheshire cat. “Yep.”
Holy shit. Gus is a computer genius, his mom is a prominent physician, and his dad is a stinking engineer? What’s next, his brother’s a CIA agent?
“Are there any others in your family?”
“I’ve got a sister.”
“What’s shedo?”
“Mechanic.”
I release a sigh. Finally. Someone ordinary.
“For NASA.”
“Of course she is.” Then I laugh again. Hard. I’m about to ask more questions when the door to my room slides open. I look over, expecting Dr. Martin to step into the room, but that’s not who’s there. “Nate?”
What is he doing here? How did he know? I quickly turn to look at Gus, who merely shrugs. “I thought he’d want to know.”
Nate’s by my side before I can stop him. “Are you okay? How’s the baby?”
“I’m fine.” I cross my arms over my chest. “You can go.”
“They’re going to do an ultrasound,” Robin, the traitor, says to him. “She was spotting after her fall on the ice earlier.”
