Chapter Four

Tayler

“You didn’t bring your books?” Luke sounds almost disappointed about the fact that I came empty-handed. All I brought was my purse.

“You were serious?” I ask, looking a little incredulous.

“Yeah,” he says with a pout. “I was a chem major.”

I laugh because who the hell majors in chemistry? “You were a chemistry major?”

He leans back against the bar and crosses his arms. He looks a little perturbed. “Pre-med.”

“You didn’t finish?” I mean….

“Graduated with honors.”

“From ISU?” I’m confused. Luke Green just doesn’t seem the type.

He pulls away from the bar and steps closer to me. “I was headed to Johns Hopkins.”

I blink a few times. I want to laugh, but the look on his face tells me that’s a very bad idea. “Johns Hopkins?” I practically squeak. “What happened?”

“What do you mean, what happened?”

My goodness, he sounds tetchy.

“I mean… why didn’t you go?”

He shrugs. “I bought the bar.”

“You chose this bar”—I point down at the wooden bar top—“over medical school atJohns Hopkins?”

“Yeah.”

“Okay.” I chuckle. “Interesting.”

“Are you laughing at me? Judging me?”

My God. He’s really angry. Atme. “Look.” I slide off my stool. “You invited me here for dinner.” I stand next to my stool, pushing it closer to the bar. “This was obviously a bad idea. You’re not in the mood—”

“I’m sorry,” he says so quickly I almost miss it. “I… uh… get a little defensive about it.”

I scoff. “Youbrought it up all braggy and stuff.”

“Braggy?” He finally laughs, sort of. It’s more a scoffing sound. Nodding, he adds, “You’re right. I was trying to impress you with my chem skills.”

“Fair enough.” I stand in the same spot, not sure what to do.

A smile is back on his handsome face. “Hop back up there. Let me feed you. What sounds good?”

“Fine,” I sigh. Pulling the chair back out, I slide onto the stool. “Fried pickles, please.”

He blinks a few times. “What else?”

Shaking my head, I smile back. “Nothing else.”

“You have to eat more than that.”
