“You’re leaving?” Okay, if he leaves right now, after that, I’m going to be majorly pissed off. I’m not going to play these stupid games with this man.
“You want me to stay?” His voice practically squeaks. “After I did that?” He points at my belly again.
“It’s three in the damn morning.” And we’re supposed to be in a relationship. “If you leave now, I can’t do this with you.”
“Can’t do what?”
Sliding off the bed, I grab the tee and throw it over my head angrily. “Any of this!” Yeah, I’m yelling. I hope my neighbors can’t hear me. “Be a grown-up, Luke. These things happen. We’ll deal with it as acouple. Running away isn’t the way you handle awkward situations like this. If you leave now….”
Luke runs his fingers through his hair. It’s shorter than it was a week ago. He must have gotten it cut. “I don’t want to leave. I fucked up. I’m sorry.”
“Stop.” I step closer to him. Taking his hand in mine, I gaze into his eyes. “We’ll deal with it. Now, I’m going to get a glass of water. You want some?” I move through my bedroom door toward the kitchen.
“Sure.” He says as he follows me out. “Got any food?”
My smile is much broader. “Chips and dip, crackers, things of that nature.”
“You’ve got to have more food than chips and crackers, babe.”
I roll my eyes, but he can’t see me since my back is to him. “You’ll see.”
After looking through my cupboards and my fridge, Luke steps up behind me, wrapping his arms around my waist as I make him a peanut butter sandwich. “You weren’t kidding. We need to get you some groceries.”
We? “It’s on my to-do list as soon as I finish up my project. Until then, I’m getting by with what I have.”
He’s kissing my neck and it tingles. But when he says, “Woman cannot survive on ramen alone, Tayler,” I laugh out loud.
“Quinn’s the ramen freak. Thankfully, Cooke requires actual food, so she’ll eat something decent while she’s at his place.”
“You need actual food too. We could go in the morning.”
“No can do. I’ve got to get up in—” I look at the clock. “—3.5 hours. I’ve got an appointment with a dentist’s office.”
“Shit.” He pulls away fast. I hate it. “Let me do that. You get into bed. Turn out the light. I’ll be there as soon as I wolf down this sandwich.”
“No. I’m done.” I hold up his snack. “See?”
“Thanks, babe.”
I stare as he eats the thing in less than four bites. “You were hungry.”
Chewing, he tries to say, “My head hurt, so I skipped dinner.”
I touch his forehead. “What’s up with your headaches? Did you go to the doctor?”
“No.” He wraps me up again. “You’re my cure. It goes away when I’m with you.”
Seriously? That’s weird, but I refuse to worry him. “That’s because I’m good medicine.”
“You’re thebestmedicine.”
I smile up at him but keep quiet. I want those words to linger for a bit.
It doesn’t last long, because Luke pats my ass and says, “Off to bed with you.”
I turn and start to walk out of the kitchen. Looking back at him, I’ve got to ask, “You’re coming too, right?”
“Right behind you. Gonna use the john first.”
