“What are you saying?”

“I’m not saying anything except your ex-husband could be monitoring you through your phone.”

“But why?”

“Who knows? Is he the jealous type?”

“How could he be jealous? He’s gay.”

“I can’t answer that question. Maybe if you told me more about him, about the two of you, I can help you figure this out.”

Her eyes grow round. “Do you think it was on my old phone too?”

“Maybe.”

“I’ve still got it. The old phone. In a box somewhere. When I get home tonight, I’ll find it and charge it up.”

“Let’s assume he’s been monitoring you for a while. I don’t think you should alert him to the fact that you know. Not yet. Maybe we could play with him a little bit.”

She shakes her head slightly. “I’ll never be able to trick him. I’m not devious like that.”

“Leave that to me. I’m devious enough for the both of us.” Still in my arms, I watch Lainie work through all of this. I can almost see the cogs spinning in her pretty head. I run my palm up the center of her back and down slowly. Repeat. Her breathing seems to return to normal in minutes. I gently nudge her closer to me. “Sweetheart?”

That gets her attention, “Huh?” She blinks up at me.

I lean down and kiss her full lips. Just a soft kiss. Not the kind of kiss I really want to give her. She leans into the kiss which I decide is a good sign. “Don’t worry. We’ll figure it out. Together. Okay?”

“Right. Okay.” Pulling away from me, she sits behind Molly’s desk. “We’d better get to work, huh? You’re not over-paying me to sit around gabbing all day.”

“Right,” I chuckle. “Get to work, babe.”
