“That’sthe loaner?” Sadie nearly spits out her wine. “It’s a BMW. I saw that and nearly wept. It’s Andrew’s dream car.”
“The other one was a manual. So, he gave me this one. I’m taking it back tomorrow; it’s no big deal.”
Violet looks at me, her eyes squinting like she’s thinking really hard. “I think it’s more.”
We all stare at her. Like I said before, she rarely speaks, especially in a group setting.
“You do?”
“I do. You say he called you ‘baby’ and ‘babe’?”
I nod.
“He kissed you several times out in the parking lot?”
“He did.”
“Do you want my advice?”
We all say ‘yes’ simultaneously.
“I’m with Agatha. You need to take that job and see what happens. There are too many what-ifs in this story. If you don’t go back and see what it all means, you’ll regret it for the rest of your life.”
“You really think so?”
“I do. What if he’s your person?”
Agatha gasps, Sadie releases a choking sound, and Keely giggles, adding, “Exactly.”
My mom used to say Dad was ‘her person’. That she knew the second she met him that she wanted him to be the father of her children. That he was the kind of man she’d always pictured herself with, strong but caring, tough but protective.
I think back to that moment I saw his picture and then the second I saw him in person, my heart beating so hard I feared it would jump out of my chest. But, what I didn’t mention back then was that I, in fact, did picture my children. The second his hand touched mine, there was a flash of my future children. It was instantaneous. I saw three of them. All blonde. But, as soon as he spoke, his deep, rumbling voice grabbed my attention. So much was going through my head that I hadn’t stopped to consider,Is he ‘my person’?
