Damien laughed, “I don’t blame you. Adelaide always was partial to your face; I’d hate to bring you back to her without one.”
I smirked, “What’s not to like about this face? It’s a nice face.”
“The face is fine. It’s the odor you emit from other parts of your body that isn’t so attractive. I always assumed Adelaide had lost her sense of smell back at the academy.” He scrunched his nose like a prissy bitch…that I absolutely knew he wasn’t.
“The same could be said about you, my friend. I’ve smelt a day-old corpse that didn’t stink as bad as you after you’ve eaten boiled eggs.” I gagged at the memory.
Damien guffawed, “True that, my friend. True that.”
We both laughed. I appreciated these moments. They also contributed to my survival.
As the laughter died out, Damien grew thoughtful again. “I need to do a little research. Give me a day or so, and I may have the solution to our problems.” He stretched and stood up from his chair. “You know there’s one thing you told the boy that isn’t quite true.”
“What would that be?” I had no idea what he was talking about.
“That there is nobody left in this world that can create a portal,” Damien smirked. “There is something in this world that still has that power.”
Damn, he was right, “Yes, but we haven’t seen a Fellat in years. I’m not even sure they still exist.”
“I know they do. Some interesting information was brought to me just recently.” A big smile overtook his face. “Be ready to leave at a moment’s notice and let the boy know to do the same. I’ll get back to you as soon as I know something.”
After Damien left, I reflected on the years I’d been here. I’d suffered through some horrible things, but every single one would be worth it if I were reunited with my love. I hoped she was alive and still with my brothers.
Now, if only I could find out what happened to Rue. I’d looked for him for years, but without our connection through Adelaide, it was nearly impossible to locate him. Maybe if I were rejoined with my Nexus, we could find him together. I knew he was too valuable to these evil bastards to have been killed.
I slowly rose to my feet. I’d better go find the boy and let him in on everything Damien and I had discussed. The next few days were going to be interesting.
I needed to make sure he’d be able to survive his upcoming battle or all of this was for naught. I knew he would fight witheverything in him because he seemed just as anxious to return to his Nexus as I was to be reunited with mine.
She must be one special girl to be able to put up with him. The boy never stops running his mouth. Her father must be a saint because I’d never approve of that pairing. We’d put off having children because of the war and after meeting Nathan, that might be the only good thing that came out of it.
Chapter 4
Hayes
Ileft Damien’s office and headed back to the training yard but paused when I saw Seamus coming down the hallway, his sniveling assistant following close behind him. He had his beady eyes narrowed at me.
Shit.
This couldn’t be good.
“Hayes, get your ass to Selene’s apartment right now. I have shit to do and having to run down your worthless ass just put me behind schedule.” He poked a bony finger in my chest.
His assistant, Marvin, giggled behind him.
I fought the urge to shove his head up Marvins’s ass. It would be a pleasant change of pace for them since Marvin kept his head up Seamus’s ass on the daily.
“Yes, Seamus, I’ll head there now.” I kept my face and voice expressionless.
No way would I give this fucker the satisfaction of knowing just how annoyed I was. It was almost a tradition with us. He tried to get a reaction from me and I denied him the pleasure.
Seamus narrowed his eyes at me once again. He knew I hated him but couldn’t reprimand me on the hunch that I was being a smart ass. Selene was a raging bitch, but I was in her faction. She wouldn’t put up with a lowly employee punishing me for no apparent reason. I suspected Seamus was in love with Selene and wanted desperately to become her Faction. He could have the crazy bitch.
When it became clear that I wasn’t going to say anything more, he and Marvin turned and headed back in the direction from which they had come.
I turned the opposite way into a long hallway lined with torchlight. The light cast sinister shadows on the stone walls, but I didn’t pay any attention to it. All I could concentrate on was getting to my room as quickly as possible. Coming to a large wooden door, I put my thumb on the sensor located to the right and fell inside. I was one of the few to have the privilege of privacy.
The cost was high.
