I smiled, “Don’t make it necessary.”

He had a lot to learn. Those men he’d dealt with this morning were nothing compared to me. I wasn’t anything he’d seen before. That would also need to be addressed before long.

“This crazy bastard tore two men apart for threatening you. I’ve seen some fucked up shit, but the brutality of it shocked even me.” Zane shivered.

“Why would you do that?” Reverie looked honestly confused. He just shrugged his shoulders and looked away.

“I don’t like violence against women. I would’ve done it no matter what. It wasn’t specifically because it was you they threatened.”

When I saw the hurt again in Reverie’s eyes, I couldn’t let that go unpunished. Making a fist with one of my hands, Jet’s eyes widened, and he grabbed his throat.

He looked around desperately, not knowing where the threat was coming from. Seeing my fist raised in the air, he realized it was me.

The big guy headed in my direction, thinking he could use his strength to make me let go. I didn’t even move, knowing he would never reach me.

Jet fell to his knees before he made it halfway. No matter how tough a person was, they couldn’t function without oxygen.

“Let him go, Oren!” Reverie punched me in the chest.

“He must understand he can’t say things like that to hurt you.” I kept the pressure on his neck his lips turned a beautiful blue.

“Fuck him. He doesn’t deserve you anyway.” Nathan came up behind her, so she was cradled between us. He was not upset in the least by my actions.

I leaned back and took her chin, raising her eyes to meet mine. “None of us deserves you. Me, least of all, but I would destroy the world to keep you from being hurt. I love you, Nexus.”

Suddenly, a red flame took the place of her pupil, and I felt a terrible burning pain under my right shoulder blade.

“Fuck!” I let go of her and fell forward, holding my head in my hands. I lost my grip on my ability and heard Jet gasping for breath.

When the pain stopped, I stumbled to my feet and went into the bathroom to look in the mirror. Sure enough, there was a mark on my back. It was a bolt of lightning lined with red and amber.

My mark was fucking gorgeous.

I closed my eyes and checked on my nucleus of power. It had been a ball of deep red, and after I bonded with Reverie, an amber thread had surrounded it. Now, it was one big ball of amber and red flames.

I’d been keeping secrets, too.

Because my father had been injecting me from a young age, I’d become a Nexus in my own right. I knew I wouldn’t take that route from the moment I met Reverie.

My love for her would always come before power. That’s why I allowed myself to have her. I chose Reverie instead of forming my own Faction. That was unheard of in our world, but I’d give up anything: family, status, and power

…for her.

Chapter 17

Reverie

This was now my life. Unexpected abilities and stubborn men.

Jet remained on the ground, trying to take in as much oxygen as possible. The guys watched him warily as if they expected him to erupt into a murderous rage. Apparently, their caution was justified, as tearing people limb from limb was well within his wheelhouse.

Oren was in the bathroom, looking at the results of my new ability, which seemed to have its own agenda.

As for me, I was stuck somewhere between exhausted and horny.

It was sexy as hell to see Oren and Nathan defending me like that. I understood now how the guys felt seeing me put Sophie in her place. If I had a penis, I’d be adjusting myself too.

Unfortunately, doing anything about it wouldn’t happen until I could close my eyes for a few minutes. I sighed and hoisted myself off the couch to check on Oren while the guys were occupied. There would be no rest for me if I didn’t make sure my Shitstorm was okay with everything that had happened. If this is how regular humans feel daily, then don’t sign me up.
