Oren was more experienced than any of us and had been dealing with this evil for far longer than we had. We did need to have a discussion. It was time he filled us in on everything he knew. I didn’t like being kept in the dark.
“Yes, let’s check on our parents. If Reverie was attacked, it follows that the Aurathion towns would also be under threat.” I could hear the concern in Chloe’s voice.
I walked over to her and grabbed her hand. “Let’s go and tell my parents we’re leaving to check on your family. That needs to be done before anything else.”
She squeezed my hand gratefully, and Zeke walked over, giving her a hug. “Let’s do it.”
When we walked back into the barn, my parents were deep in discussion, and Damien was nowhere to be seen. Grumpy looked up, then motioned us over. We joined them, and after a moment, I spoke up. “We need to see if any of the Aurathion towns were targeted, and my friends need to check on their families.” I motioned to all the guys and Chloe.
“I don’t give a fuck about my family, but I do need to get back to the academy as soon as possible. I don’t want anyone to get suspicious, and I need to see if I can find out more about what the Dark Factions are planning.” Oren ran a hand through his hair.
“Are you going to be in danger?” He had a lot of shit to make up for, but I couldn’t stand the thought of him getting hurt.
Before he could reply, Pantar spoke.“I will bring him back and make sure he is safe. There is no need for you to worry.”
“I appreciate the offer, but I can take care of myself. You need to stay with Reverie.” Oren ordered.
It looks like Oren has gotten my ability, too. What the hell?
Pantar growled,“You do not decide where I go. My Nexus is in capable hands with Mira and her family. You may need my assistance, so I will go.”
“Okay then, I guess we’ll go.” He sounded reluctant even though it was his idea. He continued to stare at me like he was waiting for something.
Before I could ask him what the problem was, Dad growled, “She’ll be back at the academy shortly. You can wait till then for your kiss. I don’t think I could stomach it.” Well then.
Oren scowled at him. Not in the least intimidated by my massive father. These men of mine were either stupid or extremely brave. I wasn’t sure which. Truthfully, they wouldn’t have any of my fathers’ respect if they were ass-kissers.
Pantar created a portal, and they stepped through. Before he disappeared, Oren blew me a kiss.
He had a lot to atone for. I could feel the agony in my chest that he was experiencing due to our separation. Good. The dick deserved it. He had no right to force our union, even though I could admit it would have eventually happened. The bond between Faction members was a privilege, but sometimes, being able to feel their emotions was a real revenge killer. It was hardto plot payback when you constantly felt the love and devotion of your target.
Somehow, I would fight my way through it. I laughed internally at the thought. I’m sure I could find a couple of guys that would be willing to help me out.
Chapter 10
Reverie
Mira returned shortly after delivering Damien to his Nexus and informed us that everything went well. I knew my dad would eventually want to check that out for himself.
“Can you tell us who attacked you?” I asked my parents.
Everything had been so chaotic since our arrival that the events leading to the fire had never been discussed—at least not in my presence.
“We filled your dad in on what happened. We need to confirm some information before we discuss things with your Faction.” Pop said seriously.
I knew they probably wanted to confirm that Oren wasn’t involved before discussing anything with me. Now that he was bonded to me and part of my Faction, it would be nearly impossible to keep anything from him. I could feel Oren’s intentions, but my family couldn’t. Even though I knew they trusted me implicitly, my fathers would never compromise on the safety of their Nexus.
“We’re going to stay in our condo in Houston. I don’t believe our enemies would want to draw attention to themselves byattacking us there. Just know we’re safe for now and concentrate on preparing for your initiation.” Grumpy pulled me in for a hug.
“What about the animals?” I asked, laughing as Rubbish and Copper chased each other around my parents’ feet.
“They will be taken care of. I plan on staying here to make sure of that. I’ll pop in on your parents a few times a day.”Mira swatted Rubbish playfully with her tail.
Rubbish wasn’t amused, but after sharing his displeasure with Mira, both animals curled beside her for a nap.
Zeke and Nathan walked into the barn. Zeke had a phone in his hand. I hadn’t even been aware they’d left. “Looks like we don’t have to make a trip home after all, thanks to Nathan,” Zeke smiled at Chloe.
“Nathan teleported to his house and picked up his phone. Mom and our dads are perfect. Nothing out of the ordinary has happened as far as they know.” Zeke hugged Chloe when she let out a breath of relief.
