I’d made it through Sussex and was on the 284 when I heard the roar of engines behind me. Using my mirrors, I saw a group of bikes I didn’t recognize and went on guard.
I sped up a little, giving the bike some more throttle. There was plenty of traffic on the road, so I wasn’t worried they’d crowd me, but that didn’t mean they wouldn’t have some kind of attack planned. Last thing I needed was a bullet in the back. I wasn’t too far from the compound though, so if it was the Kingsmen, I wasn’t sure what they were hoping to achieve.
I used the voice command to call War. He answered, asking where the fuck I was.
“On the 284 in Wantage, I’ve got a tail, looks like five bikes, they’re not up my ass, but they’ve made sure I know they’re there.”
I heard War shout something and then he came back on. “Where are you?”
“Coming up on Holy Spirit Church,” I told him.
I heard the roar of bikes starting down the line. “He’s at the Church! Two minutes,” War said to me. “Keep your ass moving, Hustle.”
He cut the call, and I looked back to see they were still there, no closer, but they weren’t dropping away either. I wasn’t scared. I was fucking pissed off. What the hell were they doing?
It wasn’t long before I saw my brothers coming in the distance. It looked like about eleven bikes were heading for me. I spotted King at the head of the group too, War to his left and behind him in the usual formation.
Glancing in my mirror, I saw the tail slowing, dropping back, then spinning. War indicated for me to join them. A few of the guys moved into a line behind War so I could turn and ride in. A group of the guys broke off and headed back to the compound.
War called me, and I used my voice to answer.
“What the fuck are they pulling?” he asked.
“I don’t know. Didn’t spot them till I got through town. They must have been hanging around.”
“Ballistic is at the compound, they’ll keep an eye on the place.”
“What does King want us to do?”
“We outnumber them, but he doesn’t want to start anything out in the open. They packing?”
“They didn’t get close enough to tell.”
“Okay, we follow King’s lead. You good?”
“I’ll be better when we know what these fools want and run them off.”
“Yeah.”
We ended the call, and I stuck in formation, following behind our Prez. I could see people watching us, cars slowing. Most people around here knew who we were, that we caused no trouble, and we didn’t want to start any, but if the Kingsmen brought it to our doors, we would protect ourselves.
They sped up, and I throttled but King didn’t go any faster. In fact, he slowed. I glanced at War and his face was hard as he looked at his father.King signaled to the side, and we all pulled up along the side of the road one after the other.
I tugged off my helmet and got off my bike as King and War did the same and came towards me. I wouldn’t question his orders, but part of me wanted to go after the assholes. As King approached, his phone rang. He listened for a minute and nodded.
“Fucking assholes,” he hung up. “We need to get back to the compound. They’ve hit it.”
I glanced at War, and we ran to kick start our bikes and spun off before King was even back on his. We’d get our asses reamed for that move, but at this point, I didn’t care. My heart was pounding out of my chest.
All I could think about washer.
When we got back, the gate was hanging off its hinges and four brothers were stationed there with their bikes blocking the way in. They rolled them out of the way to let us pass. I looked at the damage as we did. It looked like it had been blasted with some kind of explosive.
Casper was striding down the drive as I pulled up and climbed off my bike. The rest of the guys pulled in behind us and parked up. Some of them headed inside to check on everyone.
I glanced up and could see some of the Old Lady’s out on the front porch of their house. The club girls were watching too. My eyes moved over everyone, and I took a huge breath of relief when I spotted Connor with Waverley. They were at the garage, and it looked like Waverley was trying to come over, but Connor was holding her back. They got into some kind of argument about it when I turned to Casper, knowing they were both okay.
It was time to find out what the fuck just happened.
