"Yeah, sure." Trent dug into his pocket and pulled out his keys, handing them over. "Can I go back to work now?"
"Yes, but if you hear any more noises upstairs that concern you, I want you to call me. You shouldn't, but if you do..."
"I'll call. Promise."
"Good." Luca smiled. "Then get back to work."
"Are you going to be taking any appointments?"
"Uh..." Luca glanced at Randal for a moment before shaking his head. "Not for a couple of days yet. We need to get Randal packed up and moved into my place."
"Yeah, I get that." Trent stood and took a step toward the door. "If you need any help moving stuff, just let me know. Going up and down those stairs is going to suck."
Luca chuckled. "Thanks, Trent."
The guy nodded once and then started for the door. He paused when he got there and glanced back. "Thanks for lunch, Boss."
Luca waved him on. He waited until he saw Trent enter the ink studio before jingling the keys. "Let's go get Trent's car and get back to the mansion. I want to make sure every last piece of evidence is nailed in your father's coffin."
Trent's little two door car wasn't as nice as Luca's truck, but it would get the job done. After locating it behind the tattoo shop, Luca climbed into the driver's seat and then waited for Randal to climb in before starting it.
"Are we sure Rob went back to the mansion?" he asked.
"That's where he said he was headed. Why?"
"I just wondered if he might have been heading to the sheriff's office. I'd hate to drive all the way back to the mansion and find out he's not there."
"Drive by the sheriff's office. If their vehicles aren't there, then they've probably already left for home."
Good idea.
Luca drove the car around the building and then down the street toward the sheriff's department. He started to get a bad feeling in his gut when he saw several people running down the sidewalk in the opposite direction of the station.
"Uh, Randal?"
"Pull over."
Luca pulled into the first open parking spot he could find.
"Stay here," Randal said as he opened his door. "I'm going to try and find out what's going on." He was out the door and hurrying toward the sheriff's department before Luca could utter a single word.
Luca didn't like the fear that consumed him the moment Randal was out of sight. Randal was a bear shifter and much bigger than Luca. He had a lot better chance of protecting himself than Luca had of protecting him. Luca still couldn't seem to quiet the fear growing inside of him.
Something was wrong with this whole scene.
Luca gasped when a gunshot rang out and quickly scooted down in his seat. He heard a couple of screams and then nothing. His heart hung out somewhere around the middle of his throat as he peeked over the top of the dash.
There wasn't much to see, really. Several people had hunkered down behind cars. There was a body lying in the middle of the street. Thankfully, it didn't look like Randal. Too small.
"You don't want to do this."
Luca recognized that voice. It was Alpha Rob, but who was he talking to? A flash of material at the corner of the building next to him caught Luca's attention. He scooted up in his seat a little more to get a better view.
It was Ralph, his son Raymond, and the guy from the kitchen Luca had questioned when he was looking for Rob. Guess he was another one of Ralph's new clan members. He certainly wasn't Rob's. He was holding a gun on Rob.
They were bear shifters in a shifter town.
Who did guns?
