"Uh..." Albert glanced at Rob.
"Randal, do you have a picture of your father and brother?"
Randal shook his head. "Sorry, sir."
"Albert?"
"I have some back at the house, but I don't tend to carry them around."
"I have one," the sheriff said as he pulled his cell phone out. "I carry them around in case I need them."
Rob took the cell phone, glanced at the screen, and then held it out to Derek. "Can you identify the man in this picture?"
"Well, sure," Derek replied. "That's Alpha Kersey."
Oh damn.
Chapter Fourteen
"That is not Alpha Kersey," Randal said. "His name is Ralph Kersey, and he's never been an alpha of anything. I should know. I'm his son."
"No." Derek shook his head. "Alpha Kersey only has one son. His name is Raymond. He's Alpha Kersey’s beta and heir."
Randal couldn't deny that small stab of pain he felt in his chest at those words. He always knew his father never had much use for him, but to be totally denied hurt. On the other hand, his father was a monster and being disowned was a blessing.
"I'm afraid you've been duped, Derek. I actually am Alpha of the Silver Lake Clan and the King Clan. Albert here was alpha of the Silver Lake Clan. I challenged him and won. Alpha King challenged me. He lost more than his clan. He lost his life."
Derek frowned again. "I don't know what to believe. I don't want to be disloyal to my alpha, but I don't know if you're telling the truth or not."
León stepped forward. "Do you have the number for the council?"
Derek's head snapped back. "Of course I do. Everyone does."
"Call them," León said. "Ask for the records department. When they answer, tell them that you need to confirm the identity of the alpha for the Silver Lake and King Clans."
Randal wished he'd thought of that.
Derek pulled out his cell phone and dialed before holding the phone to his ear.
"Put it on speaker so we can all hear," Rob said.
Derek slid his finger across the screen before holding the cell phone out.
"Good day," someone answered. "You've reached council headquarters. How may I direct your call?"
"Records department, please," Derek said.
"One moment."
Randal blinked at the horrible elevator style music that started playing. That stuff was really bad.
"Records department," a woman answered. "How can I help you?"
"Can you verify the identity of the alpha of the Silver Lake Clan and the King Clan?"
"One moment, please."
Randal held his breath.
