I hoped so. Not that I didn't appreciate everyone's help in this matter, or the chance to stay close to David, but I needed to go back to work and to my own home.

"Do you...date?" I asked hesitantly.

"Date?"

I winced. "Never mind."

"No, no, tell me."

I sighed. "Do you date? You know, like go out to dinner and the movies and stuff like that."

"I do now, but I need to warn you. I'm a tad bit rusty. I haven't been out on a date since before Julia."

"You and Julia didn't date?"

"No."

I waited for David to say more, but he just pressed his lips together.

"Want to go out on a date?"

The rigidness of David's jaw softened as he smiled. "Just what did you have in mind, Dr. Jones?"

"Well, I was thinking we could go out to dinner and maybe catch the latest action flick and then go back to my place for drinks. Just the two of us."

"Are you planning on taking advantage of me, Doctor?"

I wiggled my eyebrows. "Only if you ask nicely."

David laughed and then pressed a kiss against my temple. "I want to take you home to meet my parents on Sunday."

I gulped. "Why Sunday?"

"They like having Sunday dinner after church. If I tell them I'm bringing someone home for them to meet, they'll be ecstatic. When they learn you're a doctor, my mother will lose her mind."

"Because I'm a doctor?"

"They're afraid I'll fall for another police officer and then they'll have two to worry about."

"Ah." Considering how much I worried about David, I could understand that. "Did you ever take Julia to meet your parents?" I didn't realize how jealous I was of the woman until the words came out.

"I've never taken anyone home to meet my parents. You'll be the first."

I grinned so wide my cheeks hurt. "That's because I'm special."

David chuckled. "That you are."

I was good with that answer.

Nervous, but good.

"This has been a pretty crazy few days, huh?"

I snorted. I wasn't sure crazy covered it.

"Is it always like this?"

David laughed. "Only when Lany's around."
