"How do you know he's telling the truth?"
"Because I promised if he told me whatever he knew, I wouldn't give him to Clarke."
"You mean Brant."
"Nope." I couldn't help grinning. "I mean Clarke."
"He's afraid of Clarke?"
"Terrified."
Yeah, I didn't get it either.

The door to the panic room opened just as I finished wrapping Joe's head. He had a small laceration on his head. It wasn't even deep enough to need stitches. He could probably do with a tetanus shot, though. Just to be on the safe side.
I glanced past him, hoping to catch sight of David. My shoulders slumped when I didn't spot him. I was really worried about him.
"Hey, Doc." Sal had one arm around Lany as he walked over to me. "We have a few injuries. You think you can take a look?"
My breath caught. "David?"
"No, he's fine. It's some of the guys who attacked us."
My eyebrows lifted in surprise. "You want me to patch up the people who attacked us?"
Sal grimaced as if he had something foul tasting in his mouth. "It looks like this might have been a police raid gone bad. Jerry is trying to get to the bottom of it right now, but these guys were police officers."
"Why in the hell did they attack us then?"
"We're still trying to figure that out."
I just didn't know what to say to that.
"We're gathering them all around front."
"I'll get my bag."
I stood and started toward the door. I knew there was an extra doctor's bag in the infirmary Lany's father had put in after he got shot the last time. I'd had to help Lany sneak out of the hospital's ICU when someone came after him. I'd brought him here. It was the safest place I could think of at the time.
Not so much today.
I quickly made my way to the infirmary and grabbed the doctor's bag before heading toward the front of the house. Jerry was in the living room on his phone, pacing and shouting, when I passed him. Lyn was taking pictures of the destruction.
One of the security personnel stood at the door. When I reached him, I held up my bag. "Sal asked me to treat any wounded."
"I think we're all good, Doc, but you might want to look at a few of the guys we took into custody. We were using non-lethal rubber bullets, but they still hurt."
I'd never been hit by a rubber bullet, but I could believe that.
When I stepped outside, I stopped and just stood there staring. I couldn't quite believe what I was seeing. Several of the armed estate security personnel stood around a group of men dressed in black sitting on the driveway, their hands restrained behind them.
One of the men had blood on his head. One lay on the ground in front of them with blood on his leg. I headed toward them. I set by bag on the ground and squatted down next to one of them. When I went to exam the bleeding cut on the side of his head, the guy jerked away from me.
"Don't touch me, you fuck!"
