I gestured to the others. "Follow them."
When I heard gunfire, I crawled faster.
"Lany!" Sal shouted, pure panic in his loud voice.
"Here," Lany called out. "I'm here."
Sal's face appeared under the edge of the table. He held out his hand. "Come to me,caro."
As soon as Lany reached Sal and was pulled out from under the table, Clarke took his place, holding his hand out to Lyn. Burke did the same for Eddie, which was weird. I hadn't heard those two were together.
When I reached the end of the table, David was waiting for me. "Are you hurt?"
"No."
"Come on. We need to get you guys somewhere safer so we can go after whoever did this."
"There was a boat down by the river," I said. "I saw a guy standing on the shore in front of the boat with one of those rockets you hold on your shoulder. I think they call them SAMs or something like that."
That was what the movies called them anyway.
"Like a rocket-propelled grenade?"
"Okay." If that was what he wanted to call it.
My eyes rounded when I climbed out from under the table. Lany was really going to have to redecorate now. Not only was there a huge hole in the wall where the large picture window had been—where I'd been standing—but the rest of the room was nothing but rubble. The furniture was trashed, the walls had holes in them, and part of the ceiling had come down.
"Damn."
"We’ve got to go, Skip."
"Right." I took the hand David held out to me and then followed him through the house to one of Lany's panic room. I thought we were headed to the one off the kitchen, but David took me to one down the hallway, halfway between the living room and the guest bedroom.
"This is insane," I whispered as I followed David into the surprisingly large room. It even had stairs leading up to a second floor level. This wasn't a panic room. It was an apartment.
David turned and cupped my face. "I need to go with Sal and the others. Can you check everyone over for injuries?"
"Yes, of course, but—"
"You need to do your thing while I do my thing."
I grimaced. I knew I had to let him go. Like he said, he needed to do his thing, which was get the bad guys, and I needed to do mine, which was patch people up. "You'll be careful?"
"I will," David promised.
"If you get hurt, I'll patch you up without pain meds."
David's lips split into a happy grin before he leaned in and brushed our lips together. "Yes, dear."
It was all I could do to watch him walk away.
Chapter Twelve
David
I waited until I walked out of the panic room before letting my rage show. I hadn't wanted to scare Skip any more than he already was. "What the fuck, Sal? Who'd you piss off?"
Sal snorted. "What makes you think they are here for me?"
